I was in management at one point when they decided that they needed more diversity in the management team. So, I was moving to another facility (sidewises, new purchase being integrated) and my position was being filled.

I recommended the obvious choice, a staff member with a lot of experience and the best production numbers, who happened to be an older white guy.

He was dismissed, as they had already decided that the new hire was going to be a black woman.

This was a huge and rare promotion. When I got it, it took me from working poor to middle class. I went from not being able to afford to have a car, to visit my mother, to taking her on a caribbean cruise.

The harm to that guy being denied the promotion he was most qualified for, was real and huge. And not just to him, but to his two daughters.
