Whats wrong with education from teachers point of view

.

Yeah, so many whiners hollering about how poor home schooled kids do not get the social opportunities that public school offers, and this is total BS!

.

Sometimes in public schools we have kids leave for homeschool; sometimes they come in from homeschool. The only, truly disserved homeschool student was a 5th grader who did not even know their letters, let alone how to read. 100% this child had a learning disability, but the parents were negligent in not getting help for them. Child ended up repeating 5th grade, nearly unheard of.

Of course not. It gets even worse. Our social workers are now the gurus of classroom management. That's right: we're supposed to take our direction from people who run groups of many 2-3 kids at a time, which is NOTHING like managing classrooms. But we have gone here because we live in the Era of the Victim. So all the kids are victims too, with trauma. Of course.
Are you allowed to video what goes on in your classrooms? Maybe parents should see how their little darlings actually behave in school.

America has a very unique culture. Unfortunately our culture is sick and no longer very functional. When the government is fucked up, the education system is fucked up, work is fucked up, relationships are fucked up, the economy is fucked up, there is only one excuse: Culture is fucked up.

No. Sadly, it wouldn't matter. In too many cases the parents don't care or it's our fault anyway.

These are millennial parents and for the most part, they're not great.

BUT.

Gen Z, in their 20s, has seen enough and from what I have gathered, want nothing to do with the "gentle parenting" of the Millennials. So, there is some hope.

Good thing that that child got the right kind of help.

Have to admit, there may be a few parents for whom home schooling is just not suitable.

Teachers have never been well paid. It's the BEHAVIOR and the attitude of the parents that have toppled the apple cart.
Show me that study genius. There are hundreds to choose from. They all say the same thing.

Teacher pay has risen MUCH SLOWER than private sector pay for a college eduction. THAT MEANS relatively to other options college grads have even more choices for higher paying jobs than ever compared to teaching.

Funding for teaching has lagged in most of the country except in high functioning education systems in the Northeast and West. The particular funding if targeted on the poor show the best results. Spending more on wealthy students shows marginal if any benefits. It makes it harder to teach with less resources and the studies show that is a big reason why they are leaving.

I included links you can click the highlighted text to get to. Not sure if you know how links work.

Oh. You won't take info from the NEA?

Make learning work again instead of fun and all will be well in education. Another crucial point, imo, is that kids need to be taught how to learn before they can actually learn.

Reminds me a recent incident involving a kid who went with his friend to go swimming. He didn't know how to swim but was heard to say, "How hard can it be". He jumped into the water and promptly drowned.

Both. Kids need actual knowledge and skills and then we can drill down into "how to learn"

We used to cherish the fact that we were accomplishing something important when we got good grades in school. The learning process was deeply gratifying.

No. I get that in the post-MAGA movement the treatment of teachers by children conditioned to hate teachers has risen. But it still lands AFTER pay and resource support. The policy leader cant tell MAGA what to tell their children but they can implement resource and pay for retention. You need to address your culture issues yourselves. Stop acting like teachers are the enemy and your kids will respect them, not shit on them.

The foundation of education is literacy, reading skills. I'm going to take a wild guess here. The schools are asking kids to read subject matter that is of little interest to them, just like Michelle's menu they have rejected it.

I think we are approaching education the wrong way by making it mandatory. I am a firm believer in letting those that want to fail fail. I am also a firm believer in helping those that want to excel to excel. I know, its brutal, but that's the shock we need to the sick system we have. Let nature do its job via survival of the fittest.

First Straight A's report card I got, I got a party! I came from an under-accomplishing bunch of siblings.

My brother was always on the Honor Roll (mix of As and Bs) or High Honor Roll (All As). The best I ever did was Honorable Mention (As, Bs, and one C). :(

My usual neighborhood, mostly C's with some A's and B's. I did poorly in math, where I actually go a D once. Almost cried all the way home that day.

How does a home schooler teach chemistry or calculus or physics?
Home schooling can prepare kids to successfully learn those things later in formal schools. Homeschooling is tutoring and demystifies learning. When homeschooled kids are older and well-grounded in literacy they often are enrolled in public schools where they usually succeed very well.
