Yeah, yeah, yeah... the agent merely photocopies the ID and takes a photo of the presenter and his duty has been satisfied.

And the electronic images get uploaded to the Feds for subsequent processing.

Which has the additional benefit of photo-identifying and geo-locating those whose identity papers don't come back as valid.
