Words don't mean much in America any more, since we can't even agree on the definitions of simple terms.
If I'm seeing this correctly, "woke" refers to the Left's long-held (and counter-productive) reliance on aggressively applying and/or weaponizing the various, wide-ranging behaviors and standards of Political Correctness and Identity Politics. So the term, while fairly recent in its usage, merely describes something that's been going on for a long time.
The term fires up the Right, it was at the heart of the rise of Trump and Trumpism, and it has played a VERY large role in every election since 2016. So now, they (especially politicians) pepper their language with the term at every opportunity. Just use the word and you've got their blood pressure spiking.
As usual, the ends of our spectrum go too far with it. The Left absolutely refuses to admit how counterproductive PC and Identity Politics have been and continues to push them, and the Right has overcompensated for its concerns by a factor of about 50, spraying the word around like water through a fire hose.
