There's no advantage to a gold standard. Gold is a currency just like a paper note. Worse, if there's an emergency and you need to expand money supply, you're kinda stuck with gold. The only way to expand money supply then is to basically devalue the currency by mixing gold with nickel, silver, copper, etc. The Roman empire declined in part because they had to dilute their currency in this way.

There's no advantage to a gold standard. Gold is a currency just like a paper note. Worse, if there's an emergency and you need to expand money supply, you're kinda stuck with gold. The only way to expand money supply then is to basically devalue the currency by mixing gold with nickel, silver, copper, etc. The Roman empire declined in part because they had to dilute their currency in this way.
