Fiat currency works just fine and can even run up account balance deficits as long as a country has shit that the rest of the world wants to buy and is serious about paying off its debts. When this changes, then it has to change from being a less of a debtor nation to being more of a creditor nation.

The country has historically had a stronger, more stable economy with a central or national bank than without it. In fact one of the worst recessions in the 19th Century was after Andy Jackson shuttered the BUS and left Van Buren to pick up the pieces. The modern Fed was created to create liquidity during financial crisis - didn't do so well in the late 20s but did much better from the 1930s on until about the last 20 years. It's deregulation that is the culprit in our most recent financial emergencies.
