It's not illegal to hate, it is illegal to kill, it's the killing that should be punished, period end of story. And the degrees you refer to should be determined by the circumstances of the crime itself, nothing else.
It's only considered politically incorrect hate speech if you call Obama an arrogant socialist, disagree with any liberal policies, fear radical Muslims or say that illegals have no right to come here and demand anything. Everyone else is fair game.
If the left bashes Republicans or capitalism, it's not hate speech, it's just free speech.
This is a prime example of how political correctness is controlling speech. No Democrat politician will come out and condemn this and will chalk it up to free speech. Had this been said about Reid, they would have come out, ginned up public outrage and demanded apologies. It's politically correct, in their eyes, to bash the right. It's only hateful when one of their own is the target.
Check out these hateful Twitter posts where lefties are happy about Barbara Bush being in the hospital and hoping she dies. If the left didn't have double standards, these would be the very definition of hate speech. Would Mrs. Bush be in danger if she met any of these posters on the street or is it just talk? Of course, the left will recognize that it's just a bunch of idiots spouting off and it's the same thing when idiots on the right insult gays, though they get treated differently by the left.

This is why PC is dangerous. It seeks to silence one side and vilifies them for doing the same exact thing the other side is doing. When the media sides with the left, you will see the liberals being excused while the right is vilified. To casual viewers of the news, it gives the impression that one side is kind while the other is mean. If the media doesn't bother to report the facts on both sides, you see where public opinion is shaped, and not on facts, but on spin.
