WHAT IS A LIE:

Lie - Wikipedia

Definition of lie | Dictionary.com

A lie is a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive.
It requires that the speaker knew his statement was false. Simple mistakes
are not lies.

A lie must also be a statement of fact. Opinions are not statements of fact.

If I say:"You are a fool", that is an OPINION.

Compare that with this statement: "You served 3 years in prison", which is a statement of fact and may qualify as a lie if it is not true.

Fascinating.

"I would build a great wall, and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great great wall on our southern border and I’ll have Mexico pay for that wall."

Clearly this is a false statement. Mexico did not pay for any part of the wall.

I think the legal definition is slightly different but this is a good start. So when is it unlawful to lie and why?

Believe it or not, a blob supporter took the Costanza view of what a lie is:

"Yes, yes and no. It’s not a lie if you believe it."

Its a lot like Norman Lear now seeing his Archie Bunker rants being trotted out as sound policy....he was writing comedy; Trump supporters think they are good ideas.

Until Biden got in office Mexico was paying for it by guarding their side of the wall and stopping illegal aliens from getting to our border in the first place.

Back 60 years ago, a lie was something you just didnt do. It was a stain upon your reputation, that could never go away, once you were called a "Liar". Today progressives lie all the time, and when caught in a lie double down.
I did not have sexual relations with that woman.
When landing in Bosnia, we landed under sniper fire.
You can keep your doctor.
I knew nothing of the business dealings of my son, Hunter.

According to the OP, George is right.

So when you call the Jan 6th riot at the capitol an insurrection, it is not a lie because you believe it.

It's not a lie because that is what it was...an attempt to stop the legitimate transfer of power from the losing blob to the people's choice.

Lying is only illegal if it's done under oath. Thar's PERJURY.

I think that's the case for the act itself, but it's also a vital component in other crimes including fraud, obstruction of justice, impersonating a police officer, and so on.

Maybe under the criminal code, but lying to someone to persuade them to do something that they may otherwise not have done if they knew the truth is considered fraud and is actionable if not outright unlawful even though there are some types of fraud that are crimes, such as defrauding the elderly.

Despite a literal mountain of such accusations against our 45th President, I have yet to see a single quotation from him that was actually a lie.

The silly and phony example in #3 above is a good illustration of the phenomenon. Candidate Trump promised (not a statement of fact, but of intent) to build a "wall" (human barrier) on our southern border, very inexpensively - which he would have done had the Democrats in Congress not fought him, tooth and nail, during his entire term of office. His professional career is filled with examples of him getting things built when no one else could, and at a reasonable cost. Furthermore, had the Democrats been rational about "immigration reform," the wall could have been paid for by a small charge on legal remittances from Mexican workers then legally in the States and sending money back home to Mexico.

So the Democrats PREVENT Trump from doing what he intended to do, then CALL HIM A LIAR BECAUSE HE COULDN'T GET IT DONE!

Leftists are evil. And stupid?

That's not the legal definition of lie.

Legal Definition of lie
