What if the NBA had single elimination playoffs?

Let's say 8 teams make the playoffs in the east. 15 teams in the east. So the bottom teams play a one and done tournament for the 8th spot?

Finishing in 8th doesn't get you the 8th spot. You have to win the tournament to get the 8th seed.

15 play 8 (assuming 8 wins)
14 play 9 (9 wins)
13 plays 10 (10 wins)
12 plays 11 (11 wins)

8 plays 11
9 plays 10

Assuming 8 & 9 win, they play to see who gets the 8th spot

So you have to win 3 games to win the 8th spot. But even the worst team with the worst record could win this tournament and potentially an NBA championship.

This scenario would make the regular season completely meaningless.

Under "Topeka", the SP "hondo50" reacted first to Post in thread '2nd USMB Chess Tournament Declared', with "fake news" as can be seen in above image, then he deleted it, after exposing him again with the very post about it.

. This Hondo50 reminds me of a Wikipedian Mullah editor, also a Hitler fan, with multiple accounts to make the impression how "so many of them" say the same thing...

Note how this fake "conservative" won't criticizes radical Islam..under any of his 17 accts.

Not at all. The top 7 teams get in the playoffs and get better seating. This play in tournament is just for the 8-15 seeds. They all suck. There comes a time when these teams give up and the season is meaningless. My idea would bring meaning back to their seasons. You can suck, finish dead last, and if you win this play in tournament, you make the playoffs.

And remember team 15 has to play the 8th seed in the first round. So you don't want to finish in 15th place.

Don't feel sorry for the 8th seed. They should have tried harder to be in 7th place. I thought about this. I don't feel sorry the 8th best team might not make the playoffs because of this end of year tournament. I think it's exciting. Of the 8-15 teams, who's going to make the playoffs? We will find out when THEY win the playin tournament.

The 8th team, the Heat, finished 37 and 45. The 7th seed finished at 500. Technically, a 37 and 45 team shouldn't even be making the playoffs. So I don't mind making them play the 18 and 64 Wizards.

That said, worst-case scenario I could win zero games in the regular season, and I only have to win 3 games to make the PO's. Why would teams (especially older ones) expend energy trying to win a bunch of regular season games if they make the PO's anyway. The NBA already has issues with regular season games having little meaning for many teams.

What if the NBA used a best of one tournament to decide it's champion...instead of a best of seven series?

I guess it wouldn't make as much money in ticket sales...but it could in theory make more in television money.

Whether it would be a good business decision or not...I'd love to see them try that....just for the heck of it.

It's an indoor sport. Unlike baseball, the NBA doesn't have to worry about weather, so no, why should they?

You don't automatically make the playoffs. You have to win the tournament to get into the playoffs. All I'm saying is take the 8-15 SEEDS and make them fight for the 8th spot.

It's pretty much the same thing as the stupid playin tournament we have to deal with now. 4 teams qualify right? And they play more than 1 game each? No one cares. No one knows what's happening. We see a team lose and then next day they are playing again. Why?

Just have all the bottom feeders play for that 8th spot. That's all I'm saying. Fight for that 8 spot. Are you feeling bad for the 8th SEED? Don't. They should have tried harder to make the 7 seat.

And make it one and done. That would be interesting. PLUS we would get to see every team compete. Even the Washington Bullet.

A team would only have to win as many games to win a Championship as it currently takes to win the 1st Round series. It would lead to lesser match ups as the bracket progresses.
