What do you think of MNS?

I was just listening to a brief discussion on Mandatory National Service, and I don't remember ever hearing a partisan political discussion about it. Things are so divided now that pretty much everything automatically falls under Red or Blue categories. I don't know where this topic falls.

Working definition: Mandatory national service (also called compulsory service) is a requirement, generally issued by the federal government, that people serve in the military or complete other works of service, most often as young people but age requirements vary. Modern propositions for compulsory service in the United States include young Americans serving in the military or working on civilian projects such as teaching in low-income areas, helping seniors, or maintaining infrastructure, among other ideas. (Mandatory National Service)

Personally, I think that we've seen a breakdown in our culture in general, and that no group has been more adversely affected by it than teens. Many/most of them seem to me to be entirely disconnected from some of the core principles than most of us older folks take for granted.

Serving a year or two in some civilian projects would also give young people a chance to mix with each other and (hopefully) understand each other a little better.

Thoughts?
The Democratic party of slavery pushes for the reinstitution of slavery every so often. This is a very clear Republican vs Democratic party of slavery issue.

We fought the Civil War over this issue. Democrats lost.

**** you! :321:

Constitution of the United States

Thirteenth Amendment

Section 1

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Personally, I'm all for it. It will teach young people discipline and responsibility, something the schools have abandon.

Is there any other place that allows slavery on the books as a punishment? Only in Crackerville.

Put them to clearing brush or other such tasks, sort of like the old CCC.

Good food, fresh air, physical labor......Make men of them.

Both my Great Uncles served in the CCC working on the Skyline Drive/Shenandoah National Park here in Virginia.

Definitely not compulsory military service. But there are a zillion potential civilian services that we could use. None more so than senior services and child services.

I did a lot of volunteering with seniors before I retired, and holy crap, that will humble you pretty quickly, and it will show you how rough a lot of Americans have it.
No military service?

This smacks of the recently deceased lib movement to defund the police and replace cops with social workers

I can see a draft to fill out our military, but thats not what the radical left has in mind

I'll take the somewhat opposite position:
1. Kids that want to go to college should go to college. (don't interrupt their education)
2. Kids that want to get a job or job training should get to do that.
3. Kids that don't have any ambition should be offered 2-year employment or "job training" by the government as the OP suggests, but there need to be "strings" attached. Drug testing for example. Then the jobs that these young people work on need to be identified. Cleaning up blighted urban areas? Running heavy equipment? Truck driving? Others???

We don't want to draft kids for the military. Right now most of them need to spend time in "fat camp" before they can even enter basic training. I like the WPA model better. Let them learn a trade and learn how to keep a job and earn a paycheck.

After graduating from college one of my nephews volunteered to work for AmeriCorps (trump is trying to kill it). He said it was a great experience. It built an appreciation of self sacrifice for the sake of the greater good. Helping fellow Americans, he felt, was something to be proud of. Kids tend to feel somewhat isolated these days. National service builds a feeling of being connected with other people in pursuit of a common purpose. Something the country desperately needs.

Better to have fat park rangers waddling around in our national forrest putting out camp fires than physically fit young men in uniform defending the country?

Hum

Drafting fat disinterested kids will not help the military. Better to keep them employed doing menial tasks elsewhere.

Drafting fat disinterested kids will not help the military.
They dont have to like it

Young men have been expected to defend the country since the founding

And that has not changed

I think the idea has merit. I don't know that it is Blue or Red.

From what I've seen on this thread so far, this is a rare case of something not being one or the other.

There would be a shitload of details to work through, but I think it's at least worth a serious conversation.

This should have been done 4 decades ago if you wanted it to have any real impact.

Our birth rates are in the tank now, and each generation will get smaller and smaller. Binding those small cadres for 1-2 years of service won't help anything.
