Really ? Ok let's throw an example out . Public schools . Do you think all public schools

Schools are like neighborhoods. When you talk about a neighborhood, you can talk about the churches, the schools, the shopping malls, the entertainment, the property and home sizes. But what really makes a good neighborhood are the neighbors. Same holds true with schools.

I was taught in a Catholic school and a very small one at that. We averaged about 40 kids to a classroom. We had no lockers. We had no cafeteria. We had no library. We had no football fields. We didn't switch classes. We didn't have college educated teachers; we had nuns. The class that they gave you was where you sat all day.

Yet student per student, we would out perform any public school children on any level of academics.

Yeah I went to catholic school too. The teachers were idiots . BUT they had a big advantage as they could just throw out problem kids and not accept special needs kids .

Public schools do not have that option . Maybe they shoould ? But that's another topic .

You missed the point entirely, and that is it's not the teachers or the schools that make the difference. Do you think those nuns back in the 60's had bachelors degrees in education? They were poor nuns, probably some of them never graduated high school themselves.

And look at home schooling. They are doing fine and who knows how good of a teacher the mother is.

You are putting too much emphasis on the buildings and the people instead of the family where the student came from. In most cases, that's the major problem in our public education system.

OK, so when a youngster comes from an area that has produced problem children for some time should we see if there is a practical solution, or just continue pumping out kids that are problems and not educated?

There is a practical solution: Anybody applying for government aid has to be fixed first before getting one dime. How can we solve poverty in this country when the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and we encourage poor people to procreate because of social programs?

I don't know how that is harsh. After all, what do working couples do when their income precludes them from a larger family? They use birth control or get fixed in most cases. It's kind of unfair when working people who would like to have a larger family can't because the taxes they pay go to non-working families twice the size of theirs.

Then there is the societal aspect of the argument. Are we better off having working people with more children or non-working people with more children? Which children will be a benefit to our society and which children will be a liability?

If we put ourselves into the shoes of racists who seek to sabotage black upward mobility, we couldn't develop a more effective agenda than that followed by civil rights organizations, black politicians, academics, liberals and the news media. Let's look at it.

First, weaken the black family, but don't blame it on individual choices. You have to preach that today's weak black family is a legacy of slavery, Jim Crow and racism. The truth is that black female-headed households were just 18 percent of households in 1950, as opposed to about 68 percent today. In fact, from 1890 to 1940, the black marriage rate was slightly higher than that of whites. Even during slavery, when marriage was forbidden for blacks, most black children lived in biological two-parent families. In New York City, in 1925, 85 percent of black households were two-parent households. A study of 1880 family structure in Philadelphia shows that three-quarters of black families were two-parent households.

During the 1960s, devastating nonsense emerged, exemplified by a Johns Hopkins University sociology professor who argued, "It has yet to be shown that the absence of a father was directly responsible for any of the supposed deficiencies of broken homes." The real issue, he went on to say, "is not the lack of male presence but the lack of male income." That suggests marriage and fatherhood can be replaced by a welfare check.

The poverty rate among blacks is 36 percent. Most black poverty is found in female-headed households. The poverty rate among black married couples has been in single digits since 1994 and is about 8 percent today. The black illegitimacy rate is 75 percent, and in some cities, it's 90 percent. But if that's a legacy of slavery, it must have skipped several generations, because in the 1940s, unwed births hovered around 14 percent.
