There are several good choices

Even the old communist SKS makes a good democrat wacko adjustment tool in a pinch that is not very expensive
I was going to recommend that as well.

Not that I know anything about guns or own any or anything.

I'm curious as to what battle rifle I should get. Obviously most people prefer carbines, like the AR15, for self/home defense, but I want a rifle that can do more than just defend me and can also be a good hunting rifle. I would rather get a battle rifle than get both a hunting rifle and a defense rifle obviously, so which would you recommend?
Just remember and old battle rifle is going to have many rounds and not be cheap or easy to just find
at some local gun shop
there are many good choices more modern but a better value
sure they look cool, parts, mags not so easy to find

It's not the 90s anymore. I bet I haven't seen a chi-com SKS in a shop for under $600 in a couple of years. Russian examples are near/past 1K now depending if they are a refub or not. Yugos are about the same as chi-com SKSs.

They don't make a lot of sense to folks now that sub-$500 ARs are all over the place with twists that support heavier bullets. Lightly used PSA examples are between $400 and $500 now. One of my go-to shops has a couple or racks of them just sitting there.

Add to that the cheap 7.62X39 spam cans are long gone so no more really cheap ammo.

That is a Ranch Rifle ( not a battle Rifle )

Depends on the local terrain which is best, and how far you intend to lug the thing around, and how common the ammo is for it. Picking one for both home and hunting doesn't leave any ideal choices. A Ruger mini is cheap, serviceable and short enough to maneuver around in a house as well as in hilly or mountain terrain as well as thick woods and urban environments, and lots of parts out there for customizing.

I can vouch for that , my L1A1 SLR ( 1961 BSA ) was a labor of love to build & source parts for , but I’m squared away with Mags , Bayo , Sling , some spares … and it was well worth it

You can’t touch a Ranch Rifle in 556 or 7.62x39 for under 550.00 $ unless it’s beater truck gun or has been bubbafied

No one thinks a Mini 30 or an anemic Mini 14 are “ Battle Rifles”
Yeah, as much of a Mini-14 whore as I am.....It's not a "battle rifle".....More fun than an AR though. ;)

I picked up a 1975 180 series last week. I love the older Mini's irons as I can still see them just fine.

They are capable of using both 5.56 Nato or .223. A .30 cal option is also available. I've used M-14s and I've also used an M-16 in battle. I think the Mini-14 is a viable option for hunting and I don't have any qualms about having one for home protection.

I have near two cases of the "yellow box" steel core I found at a yard sale.

I also got four cases (500 rds each) of excellent late 80s vintage .223 Winchester Super X 55 gr SP there.....The older minis love it but I use it sparingly.

Unless your a loaded Single Male I would recommend a CA3 , if you are loaded then a straight up HK 91 / G3 ( German not Spanish Military Contract HK / FMP )

Ohhhh your so knowledgeable and full of advice we gotta believe your Superman on this question
Keep stoking that ego. I was asked for an opinion---did you read the OP? I gave my opinion. You gave yours. You have a fragile ego and low self=esteem that you need the approval of random posters on social media. SMH. Seek counseling.
