What Are You?

I often notice that when I'm out and about and happen to be communicating with someone in a language other than English, bystanders seem unconcerned with asking "what are you?" They even ask me, the whitest cracker you can imagine. Would anyone else find this odd?

seems a strange way to ask the question and... it is odd to ask that of someone you have just met.
