A narcissist might think he is successful at his job if everyone else thinks it and he might think that opinion of himself is solely determined by what others think in a social context. His inner soul might be the creation of society around him and, because of that, he can't imagine his identity existing without society.

I might replace the word "society" with "television" in this case. They grow eerily synonymous.
