We pay exorbitant fees. Meanwhile, Panama has gone into agreements with China for special economic zones on either side of the canal

How very unamerican. Practically treason to suggest someone disengage from Wall Street.
Probably is unAmerican, I'm British and I support manufacturing and not China junk. But I'm o e of the few that supports my own country and not sell it out.

Chinese junk weighs less than american made junk so they avoid some of the draft penalty in their fee calculation I guess. The length, beam and draft of the ships play a huge roll in what they are charged, especially the length.

The Chinese junk is inferior to product made in the US, UK, Germany etc.. But folk are just orientated by price, so retailers are oriented by getting the cheapest crap in, so China junk it is. All it's done is create a throw away society, a waste problem, and a pollution problem.

Now many just rip the interior out of their living room and replace it with China junk, cheap to do, no more mismatched furniture and colours etc..

Perhaps but 75% of the traffic through the Panama canal is american

Well, the US uses it, so the US has to pay $7 a ton. Just like a toll road.

The US gave it to Panama based on a one vote margin. Unless there was a clause in the treaty to say, "You can have it until we get upset", then all I can suggest is to dig another further up the coast in a different country and get it right this time.

Take it by force, which countries will come to their aid, the US government guaranteed to protect Panama's independence.

It's biting Americas ass and the canal doesn't sound reliable.

I don't want it because the last thing we need is American soil right in the middle of Illegal immigrant homeland. As for the PC, it has been outdated for as long as I have been alive. I can't recall people ever being happy with it because it can't handle traffic from a lot of the bigger ships. We have reworked or are working toward deepening our ports just to be able to handle those monsters. California and I think Oregon probably benefit the most from the canal because they have so much petro delivered as needed by sea instead of having pipelines and such like normal folk so it shortcuts the trip from the refineries on the gulf coast.

As for the other stuff you have been posting, I don't disagree with the sentiments that people are too wasteful and too into cheap crap. We probably were too at some point, but as I have aged and have the cash to spare, I have gotten to be a bit of a snob about things being made from quality natural materials.

I never buy cheap, I never buy expensive, I go for middle ground based on reviews and I avoid China junk where possible. I even bought a beard trimmer and spent the extra making sure it said Made in EU. The plastic length cutting guards stamped Made in China
