We can compete with china in manufacturing

Its time to end the H1b visa loophole

None of these guys are H1B, as far as I know.

But you miss the point. Saying, "We suck and we don't want to compete," isn't a strategy.

We learn how to compete by investing in education and infrastructure.

It also helps if you make an engineering job worth doing for all the trouble of getting that education.

Are you ******* retarded? The problem with those designs wasn't on the assembly lines, it was in the board rooms.

Case in point, since you brought it up. the Pinto had a design flaw that caused it to explode in a rear end collision. The fix would have cost $11.00 a unit in 1970 dollars.

Someone in the boardrooms of Ford decided it was cheaper to pay the families of people killed/injured in accidents than to recall 11 million units to upgrade with the $11.00 fix.
I do not entirely disagree that American business leaders share the blame because of bad decisions

And just like you, many chose the easy way out by simply moving production to china

Not in college, but after graduation when the STEM students including engineers have steady jobs and arent living in their parents basement
again, since you like to ignore most of what I wrote, engineers don’t make as much as you think. Plus they have to pay off student loans.

Smart kids have better opportunities. They aren’t dying to be engineers.

Besides, conservatives have been attacking college for decades anyway telling kids to go into trades instead. Make up your ******* mind.

At least they can find a job to pay off those loans

Which they are expected to pay even if they work as an Uber driver

So learning something useful such as engineering is better than a degree (or in many cases ALMOST a degree before they dropped out) in psychology

Hey look, I’m not trying to tell people that they shouldn’t go into engineering.

I’m just telling you why they’re not going into engineering. The smart kids have better, higher paid, opportunities.

I would still argue that 3 years as an apprentice tradesman is time better spent than three years of pizza, beer and protesting Israel in college

To each his own.

But the fact remains we don’t have the engineering workforce to support the kind of manufacturing you want.

We don’t have the workforce to support the people working on the line either.

Your media bubble doesn’t tell you this.

I dont disagree that teenagers often make bad choices

They could use better advice from parents and teachers

They made cheap crap, poorly assembled. To compete using union workforce proved difficult.

Double the salaries of engineers and you’d see a shift. Until then, the smart kids are going to pursue other opportunities.

Why dont you say that medicine requires cheap labor?

Or members of congress should be paid the same wages they would get in India?

Why do government employees have higher pay than workers in the private sector?

When we raise the cost of cheap imports from china we are raising the income of American workers and thats a good thing
Doesn't work that way. It wasn't government jobs that were exported to China. Those were private sector jobs that were eliminated by multinational corporations, who support Republicans, that moved those jobs to China with the loving support of 100% of Republicans, and a President named Ronald Reagan. In their undying quest to break up unions. You know. Those organizations that make sure those multinational corporations have to pay American workers good wages and benefits.

Right wing anti labor conservatives can't have it both ways.

Do you want good paying private sector jobs here, or do you support multinational corporations shareholder price.

Pick one.

They are paid well enough in Silicon Valley to buy homes. Many proven ones probably make $400K. leon Muskrat pays well.

Asia pays 1/2 probably?

We have HS grad in STL BALT CHI that cant read. Teachers making $75K not producing good students.

Asian dont have those problems.

Mechanical engineers will be paid about the same as that teacher.

Um, no, that's what's called "A good business decision".

A corporation's main focus is on serving its shareholders. Its customers and employees are secondary and tertiary considerations.

Chinese factories produce high-quality products at reasonable prices. There are some downsides, of course. For instance, I wouldn't buy any steel products from China because their steel is of low quality.

Most of our mfg plants closed down 45 years ago. Sure, we have engineers, but they have never manned the assembly lines in factories. No one here wants to do that job anymore.

We need both,
those who value learning & education in both areas.
a good plumber is as valuable as a good engineer when you need one.

well, we don’t have them. What are you going to do? There isn’t some infinite well of people to just plug into these roles.

End the crooked H1b program and engineering salary’s will go up

Though maybe not double

Cmon man. Think a little.

Why will the salary go up if you end the program?

Fewer engineers to hire.

That stimulates more people to go into engineering.

Then what happens?

Salary goes back down and you have exactly the same number of engineers.

It’s already a shortage of engineers. This is what the salary looks like when there’s a shortage.

Opening our market was a bipartisan mistake

Clinton was a big enabler of china

And with cheap chinese stuff coming in US jobs exited
