Both parties are on a fascist trajectory. It's just a question of who gets there first.
In my opinion this is not accurate, though I think I can agree the nation as a whole may be moving in this direction.
Both parties embrace corporate and private capitalism, even while they are now in a remarkably profound symbiotic struggle … almost to the death.
One is now dominated by its cultish Trump / MAGA faction that is whipping itself into a frenzy, which will either triumph in the 2024 or more likely go down to defeat screaming about the need for a civil war. If Trump is rejected decisively, and his faction goes into its own death spiral, the Republican Party has a good chance to get off its present “Long March” to fascism. If not, or if they somehow come to power, all bets are off.
The Dems are different. They are now very much aware of American capitalism’s urgent and more or less imperative need to struggle internationally to maintain our country’s dominant world financial, economic & military position, and the traditional American version of neo-liberal worldwide “rule of law.” The Dems are a strongly corporatist party, controlled by corporate special interests but pandering to cultural radicals often with very strange ideas. They are not on a fascist path themselves … but nobody can say exactly where the “Brave New World” of modern capitalism is taking us all ultimately.
Of course there are very different ways to “compete” internationally. Some Republicans, still a minority, dream that a simple “America First” “transactional” relationship with competing great powers like China and Russia — or even a return to isolationism — is possible. It is not. But on the other hand, right now liberal and neo-con warmongers have been and still are in the drivers seat of U.S. foreign policy, rejecting even the blandishments of old Cold Warriors like Henry Kissinger. They have remained arrogant and determined (despite all recent failures) since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
If U.S.-style capitalism does triumph in the new Cold War against China & Russia — a big “if” but also a real possibility — the U.S. can remain more or less as in the past a rich and formally democratic country. But even then, if “American internationalism” is fake, and in the name of “freedom” we just bring death and destruction and endless proxy wars abroad, we will probably still be committing a different kind of national suicide.
