People disagree about what should be done, whether to disarm law abiding citizens or nor, or to keep violent people in jail or not. It boils down to how you assign blame for violence, no one wants violence to happen You are wrong if you think that people who disagree with your viewpoint are evil and you age goody good.

I work with a dude from Mississippi and his answer for everything is "maybe, but where I'm from, we do it like this" and that just shuts down the conversation, he's not willing to listen to facts, logic or anything. Just "this is how I see it because I'm a stupid ignorant ****"

1) Change the electoral system to Proportional Representation

This would allow more sensible politicians with more sensible policies aimed at what people actually want, rather than what the loudest want, or the ones with the most money

2) More restrictions on guns that actually make sense.

Switzerland has a much lower rate of murder than the US, 10 times lower. There are a variety of reasons for this, and PR might help to solve some of them. Having gun owners responsible for their weapons, better storage, punishment for misuse.

3) Deal with ghettos, poverty, the cycle of poverty and crime which leads to a lot of the crime. Change the attitude of people for one of dog eat dog, to one where things work better.

I could give lots of suggestions, but a pro-active government that actually works for the people and not against the people, and making laws to make people's lives better, not worse, would be a start.
