Viral post calling Congress a 'nursing home' sparks intense debate over term limits as Trump prepares to take the White House

The United States Congress has been branded a 'nursing home' after Nancy Pelosi was pictured using her walking frame to get around the floor.
Heading into the 2025 session, the average age of Congress members is 79 days older than last session, at 58.9 years old.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 84, suffered a fall last month in Europe and underwent hip replacement surgery.
She used a frame on Monday when she took part in a joint session of Congress to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election.
But the striking image of that moment has sparked questions about whether people in their 80s should still be working in such crucial roles.
'Congress really has become a nursing home,' one social media user wrote.
'Term limits. That's what America demands,' another added.
The criticism comes as 78-year-old Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House as the oldest person to be elected President.
And President Joe Biden, 82, has been forced to swat away rumors about his cognitive decline throughout his presidency, particularly in the last 18 months.
His term was riddled with embarrassing gaffes and blunders, including introducing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as 'President Putin' at the NATO summit in July, bumping into flagpoles and falling off bikes.

A bombshell report in December revealed the 81-year-old Texas Representative, who hadn't cast a vote in the six months prior, was discovered at a memory care facility after reportedly being found wandering lost and confused through her neighborhood, according to an investigation by the Dallas Express.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, 82, has also faced intense scrutiny after several concerning public episodes where he appeared to freeze mid-sentence.
To serve in the House, a member must be at least 25 years old, while the age restriction is set at older than 30 in the Senate.

Commentary:
In previous postings I have made the claim that term limits should be regulated for members of Congress.
Why is it that our Congressional leadership resembles the Soviet politburo leadership of the 1980s. The only way they leave is they’re carried out feet first, pr in the case in Moscow they fall out of windows, poisoned with rare radioactive metals, or are found in the river under mysterious circumstances.
As far as age limits are concerned, capping it at 70 is more than fair. That or limit to 2 terms for Senate and 6 for House. I’m more in favor of that myself. It’s not physical, and most people still have good use of their minds, so 70 can be a good compromise.
The longer they are in Congress, the more dishonest and corrupt they get. Power corrupts! The powerful lobbyists know they can make deals with these old leaders. They also become protected from scrutiny. Nancy Pelosi, Diane Feinstein, Maxine Water, Bernie Sanders, Mitch McConnell, and Chuck Schumer all became filthy rich by using privileged insider information to buy stocks before key press releases that affected the stock prices. They've never been held accountable. Term limits are desperately needed!

Why don't people actually address the real issue here.

The two party system. People can't vote for who they want, they vote against those they don't like more. So they vote Rep or Dem, doesn't matter whether your Rep or Dem is a geriatric or not, as long as they are keeping the other side out.

Change the electoral system so people have real choice, and you might just get a better government.

Term limits are very popular with Americans but not with big donors. I suspect term limits which would.make.Trump.very popular will not be pursued. Maybe the Trump of 2016 would have. He should force it in as part of the bill, grandfather it in for new elected members, 12 years maximum.

There is no "intense debate" here. All there is, is a random article.

Either term limits or a retirement age requires a Constitutional Amendment, not happening.

I think one would pass. The problem isn't it wouldn't pass, the problem is the people won't get the chance to vote on one.

I disagree. I think Feinstein had several good years left in her:

From a national perspective, I can't see one representative that was made better by experience. All I see is more rigged, unrepresentative government. Get some term limits and make the house term 4 years. 2 year terms are ridiculous. And even though I think Trump is still cognitively magnificent, he's an exception, there should be an age limit. For me that would be around 70.

The same applies to the president; 78 is too old to be president or a member of Congress or a Supreme Court Justice.

No, Trump is no exception.

Term limits is the bumper sticker. What difference does it make if Congress critters can stay in Congress multiple terms when the problem is their HUGE advantage in staying in Congress once there. What difference does it make if they can stay 10-, 15-, 20-years before they have to leave? None.

We have an incumbency problem, not a term limits problem. IMHO...

#1 No elected official in the Congress or the President is eligible for election in any other Federal elected position until at least 1 year has passed from the end of their current or 1 year after leaving their current federally elected position through retirement, resignation, or expulsion.

#2 No elected official may campaign or raise campaign funds while holding any federally elected office. You want to raise money to run for office, do it on our own time - not the taxpayers dime.

There would be no term limits on Presidents or members of Congress, however no individual may serve consecutive terms in any federal elected position even if the positions are different.

That means the President and members of Congress must leave the White House and Congress for at least 1 year before they can run for election again.

There would be no “incumbent” advantage as each seat starts with a clean slate.

Maybe if Presidents and members of Congress were more concerned about doing their jobs instead of raising campaign funds on the taxpayers time and running for reelection they would perform better. Get elected, do your job, leave and run again after a break on your own time.

The two party system is not the issue

The issue is the centralized power of Congress. Go ahead, create another party or two, and they will become just as corrupt.

States need to have their powers reinstated and taken from the Feds.

BTW, the centralized power of Congress is why term limits will never happen, unless states rise up and amend the Constitution for the first time in US history. The Article V provision for states amending the Constitution was put there as a safeguard against Federal overreach, which we have experienced for far too long.

Term limits will not happen because they are not in the Constitution, duh.
