Viral post calling Congress a 'nursing home' sparks intense debate over term limits as Trump prepares to take the White House
6 Jan 2025 ~~ By Brittany Chain
The United States Congress has been branded a 'nursing home' after Nancy Pelosi was pictured using her walking frame to get around the floor.
Heading into the 2025 session, the average age of Congress members is 79 days older than last session, at 58.9 years old.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 84, suffered a fall last month in Europe and underwent hip replacement surgery.
She used a frame on Monday when she took part in a joint session of Congress to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election.
But the striking image of that moment has sparked questions about whether people in their 80s should still be working in such crucial roles.
'Congress really has become a nursing home,' one social media user wrote.
'Term limits. That's what America demands,' another added.
The criticism comes as 78-year-old Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House as the oldest person to be elected President.
And President Joe Biden, 82, has been forced to swat away rumors about his cognitive decline throughout his presidency, particularly in the last 18 months.
His term was riddled with embarrassing gaffes and blunders, including introducing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as 'President Putin' at the NATO summit in July, bumping into flagpoles and falling off bikes.

A bombshell report in December revealed the 81-year-old Texas Representative, who hadn't cast a vote in the six months prior, was discovered at a memory care facility after reportedly being found wandering lost and confused through her neighborhood, according to an investigation by the Dallas Express.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, 82, has also faced intense scrutiny after several concerning public episodes where he appeared to freeze mid-sentence.
To serve in the House, a member must be at least 25 years old, while the age restriction is set at older than 30 in the Senate.

Commentary:
In previous postings I have made the claim that term limits should be regulated for members of Congress.
Why is it that our Congressional leadership resembles the Soviet politburo leadership of the 1980s. The only way they leave is they’re carried out feet first, pr in the case in Moscow they fall out of windows, poisoned with rare radioactive metals, or are found in the river under mysterious circumstances.
As far as age limits are concerned, capping it at 70 is more than fair. That or limit to 2 terms for Senate and 6 for House. I’m more in favor of that myself. It’s not physical, and most people still have good use of their minds, so 70 can be a good compromise.
The longer they are in Congress, the more dishonest and corrupt they get. Power corrupts! The powerful lobbyists know they can make deals with these old leaders. They also become protected from scrutiny. Nancy Pelosi, Diane Feinstein, Maxine Water, Bernie Sanders, Mitch McConnell, and Chuck Schumer all became filthy rich by using privileged insider information to buy stocks before key press releases that affected the stock prices. They've never been held accountable. Term limits are desperately needed!

Vodka SkelatorIn all fairness Pelosi is recovering from a major operation. She has never really been Elderly per se....though she's starting to look it these days.
Call it genetics....she gets around with a pretty good stride for being in her 80's....no good murderous witch that she is.

State retirement age is 67 but why go if you can milk the system for hundreds of thousands/millions and get your insider trading information?

Term limits require an amendment. Dead issue.Term limits are very popular with Americans but not with big donors. I suspect term limits which would.make.Trump.very popular will not be pursued. Maybe the Trump of 2016 would have. He should force it in as part of the bill, grandfather it in for new elected members, 12 years maximum.
One could be Biden's dad !!Geezus there's 12 of them 90 plus? Holy shit
One could be Biden's dad !!
That dropped by 1 when the world's oldest person died, allegedly.

Yes, the two party system is the problem, and I have been rallying against the two party system for a long long time as it is the primary cause of the unnecessary division in this country. In this country, as it currently stands, if you are fiscally conservative, believe in little gov't, stand for the constitution as written, but are also socially moderate/liberal with some safeguards, there is no one to vote for that has any political chance in hell of getting elected. Why don't people actually address the real issue here.
The two party system. People can't vote for who they want, they vote against those they don't like more. So they vote Rep or Dem, doesn't matter whether your Rep or Dem is a geriatric or not, as long as they are keeping the other side out.
Change the electoral system so people have real choice, and you might just get a better government.

Instead, you have one of two choice and neither are a holistic representation of being middle or bipartisan.
The electoral system is designed so that the 51% don't rule over the 49%. And that is something needs to be an absolute in our Federal Republic and election system.
And it's called the electoral college.Proportional Representation is the way forward.
The nation is crawling in wealth and we have people working until 67. Disgusting. If you think the US government has a problem, look at our unelected House of Lords (UK) -

Some want to work beyond 67.The nation is crawling in wealth and we have people working until 67. Disgusting.
I suppose if there's nothing more in life. Some want to work beyond 67.
Reminds me of a Benny Hill skit. Some want to work beyond 67.
