If the sanctions would have actually screwed over the Russian economy enough to make it hurt at home for them within a year of the stalemate starting (so Winter 2022 to Winter 2023) they might have had a chance to overthrow Putin and get a more tractable government to deal with.

Right now, that isn't feasible.

The sanctions did nothing but strengthen Russia's hand.

Yep, the problem is do we and Europe understand that the only way to get Ukraine's 2014 borders back is direct war with Russia.
