Although our replies in threads past probably wouldn't show it, we never thought these types of posts were speaking for all Canadians.

Arabian Sea (SatireWire.com) — Canadian television reported Friday that a Canadian warship in the Arabian Sea had seized a tanker suspected of smuggling oil from Iraq, leading many to suspect that the report was a hoax.

"You're kidding, right? Canada has a warship?" asked U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. "Like for war?

"Does Canada know?" he added.

"Nobody was more stunned than we were," said Kali Omari, first mate of the seized vessel. "We saw this frigate steaming toward us, and we were worried, but then we saw the maple leaf on the flag, and we thought, 'Oh, Canadians. What the hell do they want?'"

When an officer of the HMCS Vancouver announced that the tanker was about to be boarded, the crew of the detained ship was confused, said Omari, but their confusion quickly turned to anger when they saw what the Canadians sailors were carrying.

"They were armed. With guns," said Omari. "Canadians. With guns. And a warship. What is this world coming to?"

"They were pretty rude, too," Omari added. "They started asking us all sorts of questions, like 'Where did that oil come from?' But first we wanted to know who gave them the damn warship."


According to Canadian defense officials, the Vancouver is one of four frigates deployed in the region to assist in the U.S.-led Afghanistan conflict. The tanker was stopped, officials said, because its cargo of crude oil violated United Nations sanctions, which prohibit Iraq from selling oil unless in exchange for food and medicine.

The U.N. said the incident is already under investigation, and promised swift action against those found responsible for giving the Canadians guns. Initial findings indicate that the Vancouver crew may have been watching too many American television shows.

Post-September 11

Canada expanded its scope of activities in Afghanistan shortly after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.

Following condemnation of the terror attacks by the UN Security Council, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced that Canada would contribute air, land and sea forces to the international campaign against terrorism. Since October 2001, Canada has contributed up to six warships to the coalition fleet in the Arabian Gulf-Arabian Sea area in support of Canadian Forces' Operation Apollo. Part of their mandate has been to conduct maritime interdiction operations with allied vessels, preventing al-Qaeda and Taliban members from escaping the area in merchant ships and fishing boats. Canadian military aircraft, including helicopters, airlift and long-range patrol aircraft have also contributed significantly to Operation Apollo, both inside and outside Afghanistan.

In February 2002, a contingent of 850 Canadian soldiers was deployed to Kandahar for six months as part of Operation Apollo. Integrated into the U.S. Army task force, the 3rd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Battle Group took part in offensive operations against the Taliban regime which had been aiding and harbouring terrorist groups. The Battle Group was supported by a squadron of Coyote armoured reconnaissance vehicles and combat support elements.

At the same time as Canada was working towards enhancing the security of the Afghan people, it was also responding to the immediate humanitarian needs of those affected by the conflict, including both internal refugees and displaced persons. In addition, Canada began work with the international community on longer term peacebuilding and reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan, including rebuilding governance structures.

Thank you Jimmy.

I wish more Americans realize that while Canada did not and still does not agree with the war in Iraq, they are still US and UN allies and do have responsibilities in Afghanistan. Canada simply is nation with a small army. It has, since korea, been an army of peacekeepers. But compared to our army size we have a large expeditionary force stationed in Afghanistan conducting operations against the Taliban and the terrorists. I believe the number is currently about 1600.

Let there me no mistake, Canada is against terrorism 100%, but I think it is safe to say that our idea of how to tackle it is indeed different from the US, but hardly mutually exclusive.
