I get the 'offensive/defensive' component, we attacked Iran so I have no issue with other NATO members sitting this one out.

But it clearly states that 'an attack against one is an attack against all.' IF Russia attacked the US, would the US retaliate militarily? So the NATO pact means that if Russia attacks a NATO member country, we would then be obligated to strike back against Russia.

Again, this is how skirmishes turn into WORLD WARS.
