'IHS Markit, a London-based economics research firm, conducted a survey of just over 800 manufacturing companies between October 12-26 and discovered that President Trump's deepening trade war would raise prices for US consumers (tariffs are a hidden tax), but here is the shocker: it will not bring back many overseas manufacturing jobs.

As the administration's tariffs on $34 billion worth of Chinese goods kicked in July, President Trump, White House officials, and conservative media unleashed a wave of propaganda emphasizing that higher duties would encourage the revival of America's manufacturing sector. By Sept., Trump announced another round of new duties of 10% on $200 billion in Chinese imports, which will increase to an eventual rate of 25% by Jan. 01.

To make matters worse, China immediately implemented retaliatory tariff, calling it the "biggest trade war in economic history."

Months later, the administration's promise of a manufacturing revival through taxing Chinese imports had backfired. More than 4 in 10 companies surveyed said they are raising prices to offset the higher cost of production (again, a tax on American consumers as real wages remain to stagnate). About 1 in 10 said they expect to reduce the share of total output manufactured outside the US. Approximately the same number said the tariffs would encourage them to move more jobs back home.'

Once again, people who know WAY more than Trump does tell it like it is. Trump's moronic tariffs will NOT help America.

All I can say to the fine folks at Zero Hedge...

There are no good taxes.

There are better ways to combat China's currency cheatery than screwing over Murican farmers and workers.

The idea of "raising prices to offset the higher cost of production" is scare talk, designed to ward off a higher cost of production. As a former college economics teacher and former business owner, I can attest that doing this generally results in 2 things >> a reduction in SALES, and a reduction in INCOME/PROFITS.

There's a reason why a particular price is what is it. First year college kids know that the reason a firm chooses a price is because that is the highest price it can charge without triggering sales reductions$$$.

Likewise, the firm cannot lay people off either. My ex-wife had a boutique in a mall. She had 10 employees. But why 10 ? Because that was her lucky number ?
Just like with the prices, her choice of 10 employees comes from what number makes the most money. Less employees = less SALES.

Trump is on target to restore America back to the sanity before 4 US idiot presidents gave China unrestricted access to our massive/valuable MARKET, while our exporters to China were blocked with 25% tariffs. The solution for US manufacturers in China, facing exporting becoming no longer economical, is to move back to the US, thereby

1. Avoiding the US tariffs

2. Avoiding the heavy shipping costs

3. Taking advantage of the new, much lower corporate tax

4. Taking advantage of the new, much reduced level of business regulation.

5. and realizing that Chinese wages are far higher now than they used to be.

The reasons for US manufactures moving overseas have largely dissipated, and the main thing keeping many US manufacturers there is simply economic inertia. It does cost money to move, but over the long run, it's now advantageous for these companies to do that ASAP.

I don't know how this craziness started exactly, but my best guess it was from a weak president (Bush 41) trying to secure US safety from China nuclear weaponry.

So what's the problem? I'm willing to pay more for things, if it means busting China's balls. They need us a hell of alot more than we need them.

You won't pay more for anything. And for those companies who do raise prices, they will pay bitter prices in losses from reduced sales. This is exactly the kind of mismanagement that contributes to companies going out of business (the # 1 reason)

That's the beauty of American capitalism. If you don't like the product or the price, someone invariably fires up a business and offers a better product or price.

But anti-Trumpers go around pretending that they can raise prices in accordance with tariff costs, and pass them on to the consumer. Scammers.

I have vendors looking for price increases due to tariffs, I find different vendors at a better price, guess what? They come back with better prices...

We cannot continue to support the World, we can continue to help, but not support!

NO, the number one reason why companies go out of business....They listen to a liberal union worker who overpromise the goods without finding out if the company can support it..

Negotiating trade with tariffs to get a better deal or get concessions from other countries isn't a bad thing...........this nation did it for a very very long time until someone said it was broken...............

You don't get deals by getting fucked by other nations who are using protectionism against us without some blood in the water...........In regards to the Auto industry the EU recently made an offer to go ZERO on all auto sales there and here..............which would end the biased tariffs from countries like Germany.

Which would actually BE FREE TRADE now wouldn't it...........The agreement isn't set because of steel, aluminum, LNG, and agro negotiations.......as Trump is using the Auto industry as LEVERAGE against the EU for the other deals...........otherwise it would already be agreed to..........

Had we done it the old way..........we would have NO CONCESSIONS...........Protectionism abroad on our products.........while getting nothing in return......now we are close to a REAL FREE TRADE DEAL with Europe...........We didn't get there being nice.
