Much is made of the performance of public schools in America's cities. There is plenty of responsibility to share on the individual, institutional, and even philosophical levels. Granting all that, it is worth taking a moment at least to recognize that many of the kids attending these schools (yes, immigrant kids too) and living in densely-populated urban areas put in an admirable effort to learn despite very challenging circumstances. There are plenty of kids from wealthy families attending exclusive private schools who can't be bothered to exert themselves because they don't have to. There are plenty of kids at some rough city schools who are trying their damnedest to get an education despite obstacles like poverty, hunger, the financial responsibilities of adults, and even legitimate fears for their personal safety.
