Much is made of the performance of public schools in America's cities. There is plenty of responsibility to share on the individual, institutional, and even philosophical levels. Granting all that, it is worth taking a moment at least to recognize that many of the kids attending these schools (yes, immigrant kids too) and living in densely-populated urban areas put in an admirable effort to learn despite very challenging circumstances. There are plenty of kids from wealthy families attending exclusive private schools who can't be bothered to exert themselves because they don't have to. There are plenty of kids at some rough city schools who are trying their damnedest to get an education despite obstacles like poverty, hunger, the financial responsibilities of adults, and even legitimate fears for their personal safety.

Just sayin...

Worst school I ever went to was in a small rural town near Roseburg, Oregon. Best School I ever went to was a two room schoolhouse with one teacher and 17 students, 1st through 8th. Quality of the school ultimately depends on the parents in the district, and how much they care about the education their children are getting.

So, Unk, can I assume that you support charter schools and vouchers? Best way to make a better education available to kids attending sucky public schools.

Maybe not parochial schools...they are suffering now from bad press.

Eh?

"There are plenty of kids from wealthy families attending exclusive private schools who can't be bothered to exert themselves because they don't have to."

What do you mean they don't have to? Do they simply magic score higher on standardized tests?

My brother had to pull his kids out of one of those urban schools that have been overrun with progressive values so that they could actually focus on their studies instead of being stuck in a circus. They also in fact did have concerns regarding their personal safety FROM OTHER STUDENTS. There is one thing about those urban schools that I find interesting. No matter how badly the students perform, no matter how badly the students behave, no matter what happens, leftists will always have a never ending supply of excuses.

Additionally, they never use any of those excuses in the case of kids in poor rural schools. Some of the lowest per family income areas in the USA are in the Appalachian mountains, yet you never hear leftists crying out with sympathy for those dirt poor hillbillies.

Let's take a look at Owsley County in Kentucky. The county is rural and 98.7% white.

"It was a county formed 19 years before the Civil War. But in the towns lying between borders in Owsley, in the coal fields of eastern Kentucky, a portrait of Americans shows a community that appears frozen in time, where many still live without water or electricity.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the Appalachian county has the lowest median household income in the states - a staggering 41.5 per cent of residents falling below the poverty line.

Job shortages hit the region hard due to declines in demand for coal, lumber and tobacco; and the community of 4,700 is struggling for work.

The U.S. Census Bureau considers low income roughly $45,000 a year for a family of four. In Owsley, the median household income is $19,351 - the lowest in the country outside of Puerto Rico."

"OWSLEY County has an overall crime rate of 361 per 100,000 residents. This is one of the safest regions in the United States. This means that your chances of becoming a victim of any type of crime in OWSLEY County is 1 in 277 if you reside there for a year."

The US average overall crime rate according to that site is 4,506. Dirt poor county with some of the loosest gun laws in the country that massively supports the second Amendment and they have one of the safest counties in America. Perhaps not having a culture that glorifies gangster behavior and not having the rest of the country make excuses for you no matter what has something to do with it. If they have one thing going for them, it is that they have largely been spared from the disease of progressivism.
