If there are private schools there is no monopoly as anyone can go to the private school if they have the money and meet the schools criteria for acceptance.
if parents want to pay for there kids to go to private schools then no one can stop them. so there is no competition. Its a choice based on what they can afford.
Public school by its nature has to accept anyone that lives in that district. The good, the bad , and the ugly. But your just beating the drums to be heard. Quite a few people have graduate from public schools and went on to have successful careers.

This is just a sample. I sure many people on this board have went to public schools and they have gone on to have a good life.
What republicans fear is what they can make up to be afraid about. Self-fulfilling prophecy,
process through which an originally false expectation leads to its own confirmation.
Presidents Clinton, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, Johnson, Eisenhower, and Truman all graduated
from public high schools.
So public high schools are not the problem. The problem is generally what parents teach their kids or don't teach their kids.
