We had Canadians coming to the city to get health care. They could have got that Canadian shit for free but chose to pay for private care in the US.

We were told not to schedule any doctor's appointments for Monday or Tuesday because that was when all the Canadians would be there.

The point of universal health care is that everyone stops paying twice as much for private health insurance.
And the private health insurance is no good anyway, if you lose your job, move out of state, etc.
So we would be spending less than half as much if we went with public health care that did not charge.
The current private health insurance we would be saving, are more than twice the additional tax burden we would have to increase.

The US has less waiting for health care than when it is free like in Canada, but in general more people go to Canada from the US for health care, than go from Canada to the US.
Your particular experience could be due to the US side having an urban center and there being no close by Canadian urban certer.

But insurance companies simply skim off over half the profits, so result in worse health care in the US, where you are forced to prepay and have no ability to negotiate based on cost or quality.
