Would it surprise you to learn that since the $20 minimum wage increase took effect in Aprill of 2024 that california has had a record amount of fastfood jobs from then till now? Employers are hiring at a rate that far exceeded anything we've seen over the last 20 years. I guess there goes that narrative, whoops!

In January of 2023, fast food jobs were at 724k in California. As of March 2026, it currently stands at 746k.

Nope, not Newsom, the BLS, and yes it is true. Look at the jobs numbers for fast food in March of 2026. There are way more FF jobs now than before the minimum wage hike. I don't doubt something bad happened for all those jobs to disappear, and it could very well have been the shock of the $20 minimum wage, but things like this have a way of correcting themselves.

A simple search reveals it

Not just fast food jobs, it's also other small business jobs where minimum wage increases made it impossible to turn a reasonable profit. Especially those businesses that are also hammered by the increase in gas prices.
