I'm no expert on the relations in that region but I have an opinion. No disrespect to you is intended.
I believe Vladimir Vladimirovich reacted in anger because the U.S. did not keep its word regarding becoming allied with former Soviet client states on Russia's borders. He knew Obama was a weak sister and he assumed he could use Russian nationalism to cover for his moves against Ukraine after their elected government kicked out a Putin Puppet. Crimea was majority ethnic Russians, yes? The same is true of Donetsk and Lugansk, yes? STILL, there is no precedent in international law that allows sovereign nations to be chopped up into ethnic enclaves simply because the "mother" country for those enclaves says their "people" are endangered.
During Trump's 4 years, Putin was regularly invoked as being Trump's puppetmaster but Trump hammered Russia with sanctions regularly and Putin did not make further moves on Ukraine, especially after Trump sold them LETHAL aid instead of pillows and MREs.
NOW, most Americans have NO IDEA who is actually in control in DC. It certainly isn't that senile old man that can't string sentences together without notes. PUTIN knows this better than half of Americans and he seems willing to test us in a serious way.
