I dont think the current fascist regime is an outlier. I think thru history there has always been a struggle in the US between good and evil.
The US has led the world on progressive enlightded policies. But there is also a darker side of the US and it is this sinister side that holds sway at the moment.
You can trace it back to independence when the brits offeree freedom to tha slaves to revolt against their freedom loving overrlords.
As the country grew fascism took hold in the confederacy which was a nai regime.
After the war fascism held sway thru the evilLLim Crow laws.
It ran thru this century where nazi voices were popular. Check out Father Coughlin and the german bund who were all in for Hitler.

Macarthy was a nazi IIm sure you could name many others,
Now they are back in the form of Trump,Miller and Hegseth.
Its not terminal and at this stage america can still be saved.But it explains why the world no longer looks to the US for leadership. Or anything really.

Has your illustrious government sent any citizens to the gulag for exercising free speech in the last few hours or days? How are those gun rights coming?
