U.S. Capitol Police to Be Sued for $10 Million for Killing Unarmed Rioter

With all due respect, Fort...there is a progression of force that should be used in dealing with a protest that's gotten out of hand. You don't start shooting unarmed people UNTIL you've employed tear gas...or batons. To jump all the way to shooting someone is an issue.
Do you think dispersing teargas indoors in a small enclosed area is a good idea?

Mr. Bolton found that the agency’s leaders failed to adequately prepare despite explicit warnings that pro-Trump extremists posed a threat to law enforcement and civilians and that the police used defective protective equipment. He also found that the leaders ordered their Civil Disturbance Unit to refrain from using its most powerful crowd-control tools — like stun grenades — to put down the onslaught.

[...]

But on Jan. 5, the agency wrote in a plan for the protest that there were “no specific known threats related to the joint session of Congress.” And the former chief of the Capitol Police has testified that the force had determined that the likelihood of violence was “improbable.”

False, cops resort to any force necessary to protect the safety of others. When that violent mob began penetrating their barricade to get to lawmakers on the other side, any force to stop them is acceptable. That's why the cop was cleared of any wrongdoing following a 4 month investigation that spanned under both Trump & Biden.
That might be the most ridiculous thing posted here today, Faun! Police can resort to the force necessary to protect the safety of the public but in no way does that give them license to use a level of force totally inappropriate to the situation! You shouldn't be shooting unarmed people until you've used non lethal means of discouragement!

Key words in this article are "plans" to sue them. Also "within the next 10 days" to file a lawsuit.
This interview was given by the family's lawyer...who can speculate all he wants. It don't make it truth. :)
Big hill to climb to get this kind of judgement..even civil-wise.

She was participating in an insurrection that she as a military veteran should have known was wrong and contrary to the oath she took.
My guess??...settlement for a paltry amount vs the amount her family's hotshot lawyer is demanding.
She was trespassing protesting our corrupt government---there was no insurrection.

Still false. And again, this was investigated under two administrations and the cop was cleared of any wrongdoing.

They weren't there protecting "the public" they were protecting our Congressional members, these aren't regular patrol officers they are for lack of a better term "protection officers".

U.S. Federal Law Enforcement Agencies

There are 65 U.S. federal agencies and 27 offices of inspector general that employ full time personnel authorized to make arrests and carry firearms. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, in 2008 the largest employers of federally employed officers were U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Federal Bureau of Prisons, the FBI, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, each with over 15,000 full-time law enforcement. Federal officers’ duties include police response and patrol, criminal investigation and enforcement, inspections, security and protection, court operations, and corrections.

Mr. Bolton found that the agency’s leaders failed to adequately prepare despite explicit warnings that pro-Trump extremists posed a threat to law enforcement and civilians and that the police used defective protective equipment. The police didn't have any crowd control...
The crowd did...they had bear spray and pepper spray...

The crowd got into the capitol building in a dozen different locations. Through windows they had broken and doors.

Then once inside the officers were still not handling the protesters in an effective manner.

When the House Members finally recessed their session because of the protesters they only had the one escape corridor left that wasn't filled with protesters. (Rolling eyes here) They had been repeatedly warned as to the condition of the building.

So when the lady was shot standing in the window frame beside the door there were house members less than 50 feet away...she climbed up to see them scurrying for their lives to safety and was fatally shot for her efforts.

Up to this point she had obviously witnessed the police abandon post after post...

The shouts of "GUN" could be heard...but she climbed into the window anyway. Why she thought that it was acceptable to do so we won't know. She is dead.

If the officer had fired a warning shot...a very different outcome might have happened. But the shot was clearly heard. And the crowd ran at that point.

Following this exchange I've concluded that the Select Committee's hearing, starting today (9:30AM), should be informative for all.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

And then this:

"You shouldn't be shooting unarmed people until you've used non lethal means of discouragement!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"non lethal means of discouragement"
OK. Sounds not unreasonable.
I could support that.

Which, to my oft-naïve eye would encompass putting up a barricade, even one behind locked doors (!), loudly warning the perps to cease & desist, brandishing a gun.......all seem pretty, umm, discouraging in a non-lethal way.
Or would to any legitimate 'protester', or even some wandering 'tourist'.

But for the now dead nutjob lady who was duped and snookered before, and most especially at an enthusiastic rally by folks she considered to be qualified leaders....Don Trump, Rudy Giuliani, Trump Jr., Paul Gosar, Mo Brooks,.......despite those locks, barricades, warnings, and a pointed gun, well, that didn't seem to be enough to give the now dead lady a hint she was entering a dangerous part of her personal obtuseness.

RIP, dead lady. You left as a legacy the wisdom of the old bumper-sticker quip: ."Play stupid games...win stupid prizes."

OK...so you've put up a barricade and locked doors...you've warned and you've brandished your weapons...none of which is stopping what's going on...correct? So why is it you go from THERE and jump right past the point where you use pepper spray or a baton to discourage further entry to the rather drastic step of shooting someone who's unarmed at point blank range? Do you see my point that the response wasn't appropriate to what was taking place until other non lethal steps had been tried?

Why would Ashli think that a Police officer would shoot her in the head when we've all just seen month after month of liberal protesters doing far worse things than were happening at the Capital that day and NONE of them were shot in the head by Police? Why the double standard? Because it's the Capital Building...the "People's House"? With all due respect what makes THAT off limits to protest when violent protests took place all across the nation for years and nobody was shot at by Police?

Walmart isn't the Capitol, the seat of Democracy. There were no Senators conducting official government business.

The two are completely incomparable.
So why was the "seat of Democracy" so poorly protected by those in charge, Itfitzme? Why wasn't security prepared when they were told days before the protest that it very well might turn violent? Why was the Capital Police Chief's request for National Guard troops to bolster security repeatedly ignored?

You've yet to show that cop was armed with pepper spray or a baton. He wasn't a uniformed police officer.

He didn't shoot her in the head. And it's not comparable to the summer riots as the summer riots weren't an assault on our seat of government, trying to prevent the peaceful transfer of power so ingrained in our democracy.

His request for National Guard was rejected when he downplayed the threat of a potential attack.

These are the same people who think George Floyd was justifiably put out of his misery by the heroes of the boys in blue.
It must be easy to imagine some unknown "others" that you claim to want all sorts of things
when tying to substitute their opinions for yours.
