JFK had a massive tax cut in 1962. Every big ticket consumer item was made in United States. Autoworker gets tax cut. Buys washer and dryer for home now that he has extra cash. This benefits the workers at the factory that makes the washers and dryers. Worker at washing machine factory has extra cash. He decides to buy a new car. That helps the workers in Detroit. Now, close the washing machine factory and send it to China. You just broke the chain of economic interdependence of Americans and places like Detroit look like the rot that it is today.
