There is nothing new under the sun, here. Humans have been mistaking emotional experiences for divine revelations since there were humans.

6000 years ago, Sumerians were seeing the gods after getting a fever. 4000 years ago, Native Americans were seeing gods after taking peyote. 2000 years ago, Buddhists were seeing gods after meditation and fasting.

It's just a curious artifact of our consciousness.
