You seem fairly capable, so I will explain why I think Trump was right and it is Fauci who was wrong.
First of all, I am not a Trump supporter, so forget politics.

The problem with social distancing is that it does not and can not end any epidemic.
Instead all it does is "flatten the curve", which if you think about it, just delays and makes it last longer.
The whole point of how herd immunity works is by a virus getting too greedy and using up all its potential hosts too quickly. So if you force it to conserve hosts by slowing it down, you prevent burn out and make it last potentially forever.

So then why did Fauci say herd immunity was a bad idea?
Fauci made a number mistakes.
1. That was because of little testing, so then we estimated lethality based on those with such bad symptoms that they wanted to get tested. Later we tested more and found out 90% of those infected were asymptomatic and therefore never got tested or counted. So Fauci though it was 10 times more deadly than it really is.
2. Fauci assumed no one had inherent immunity, and that is wrong. It seems now that all children are essentially immune, along with all those 90% asymptomatic. So most of the population was already immune and did not have to contract and recover in order to gain immunity. His number of people needing to get infected as at least 10 times too high.
3. Fauci assumed all people were equally at risk and that herd immunity would put all people at equal risk, and that is wrong. Elderly are 40 times more at risk, so if one deliberately infects the healthy/young, you reduce the death toll by a factor of 40. Its called variolation.
