Alex Azar testified before Congress on, I think, Feb 24, just few days before we had evidence of community spread and a few weeks before shit really hit the fan so it’s a really insightful look at their thinking just before they had to pivot (and right before Azar was supplanted by Pence as the “leader” of the response).
It seems they were quite focused on travel bans, screening and a vaccine. It looks to me like they were thinking we could delay the virus affecting our country until they had enough time to develop a vaccine, which would have taken 6-9 months minimum.
I think our CDC was blindsided. There’s going to be a lot of analysis on this for years to come. Hopefully Republicans decide that oversight of the executive a thing they want to do again. The degree to which China’s obfuscation affected us is sadly going to be next to impossible to determine and is going to unfortunately become a Rorschach test.
