trump suggest lowering China tariffs to 80% before first meeting

Why not just keep the tariffs where they are so nation gets the $$$.

President Donald Trump on Friday set negotiating terms for his administration’s first discussions with China, which are set to take place in Geneva this weekend.

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump appeared to lay out his demands — and concessions — for the meeting between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and their Chinese counterparts. Trump said China must import more US goods, and in return, he believes the United States should lower its 145% tariff on most Chinese goods to 80%.

“CHINA SHOULD OPEN UP ITS MARKET TO USA — WOULD BE SO GOOD FOR THEM!!! CLOSED MARKETS DON’T WORK ANYMORE!!!,” Trump posted.

They have no even met in Switzerland yet and trump is caving. Amazing! He screwed the world economy up and then backs down when things begin getting rough. As always, trump is just a blustering coward. He bullies and speaks like he is strong, but we know he is insecure and afraid. He is demonstrating The Art of the Squeal.
You call it caving, the adults call it part of the negotiation process. You SERIOUSLY need to get Trump out of your head, your life is suffering.

Trump is the Democratically voted president of the United States of America. Who are you? You are a lap dog apologist to a non-elected Fascist and Nazi-loving clown of a useless fake country.

I didn't vote for him, and the fact that our system is so broken that someone so manifestly unfit can be president is a sad commentary.

It's like we put a mentally challenged toddler in charge.

I went to the store to price a new grill for my balcony. The cheapest one I saw was $450.00. Last year they were closer to $300.

So who loses in that scenario? I'm not buying a new Grill at that price (I ordered some repair parts off of Amazon and will keep using the one I have.) The store isn't making a sale.

The problem is, it's not just the workers at a non-existent factory who are the losers. The consumer and the retailer are also losers.

That's your choice.

Have you heard of perceived value? It's where you perceive a price of an item that's acceptable to you. Some will think $450 is cheap, some will think it's bang on the money, and some will think it's extortionate.

Whether the shop is massaging prices for sales etc.. or tariffs alters the price, just shop using your perceived value feeling, then you avoid these dramas.

Or, we could just not engage in economic foolishness.

I'm sure that the store probably marked up their stock in anticipation of Tariffs. (Also, this is the time of year people buy grills, so supply and demand and all that.)

I also bought a new car a few years ahead of my schedule because I know tariffs will drive up the costs of even American-made models.

The point is, this is an unforced error that will damage the economy.

My advice is, just stick to perceived value. Doing things because of others, or you think you're fighting a cause, is foolish, imo.

Every president past, present, and future, there's always a crowd that will tell you about damaging the economy.

Okay, you aren't the smartest person in the room, you just think you are.

I've never claimed I am, I just go by experience in accountancy, retail, manufacturing, and construction background. Retail for 15 years in management and HO. So you go for it, do what keeps you happy. You just forget about perceived value, the concept is beyond you.

If a price increase, say by a tariff, moves a product out of your perceived value, climb down off your soap box and buy the product that fits your perceptions. It's not rocket science, but I suppose it creates whinge material.

USA is going to place a permanent 30% on Chinese goods and China is going to drop tarrifs to 10% on American goods.

That's the deal.

It's an OK deal broadly....but I'm wondering about the details about IP. Are they going to continue to steal all of our intellectual property rights?

Um, what does that have to do with Grills being too fucking expensive to replace.

Probably.

You guys are such chumps. Trump just jacked up taxes on you, brought back no jobs, and put the markets into turmoil.

True, that is less than what China was charging the US in 2024, which is a win, it will make American goods a cost less in China which will create a demand, also the difference in the tariffs will lower the trade deficit, so to good things to come out of this little tug of war. The big issue was China can not afford to get into a tariff war with their largest customer and it is about damn time a politician figured it out. This has been a sore point with American businesses doing business in China, the playing field was not equal.

Am I gonna have to really explain this to you? What's your budget and perceived value for a BBQ? If it's $400, then buy one where a $400 model looks and feels that it's worth $400. If a model went to $500 because of tariffs, ignore it. Stop crying.

Um, no, the problem is that $500 because $100 of added expense due to the government screwing the working class is wrong.

The BBQ shouldn't cost me more than $400 - the cost to manufacture it, import it, and the distributor and retailer getting their cuts. They all did something material to get that BBQ in the store for me to buy it.

The government did nothing to provide that product. Sweet Evil Jesus, I remember when Conservatives hated taxes and government interference.

I have not followed your argument on this topic until after 4:30 Tuesday.
Chinese factories closed down and in cases the factory vanished. To the shock of Chinese workers who came to work yet learned fast it had been gutted by the owners and the work no longer existed. If Grills were available in the USA where Chinese products were sold to Americans, seem to me those firms thought prices would be high from then forward. Trump solved that problem.

Not sure what you are babbling about.

For $89, I was able to replace the defective components in my current grill and expect to get a few years of life out of it.

Oh where were those parts made? China.

My error was thinking you can understand Joe. I discussed what you said. I would never know how you got the grill or components of it. It seemed to me you have problems getting grill parts. Now I now that is not true at all.

Well, you clearly didn't understand my point. But Mormonism is like a learning disability.

My point was that I would have very much liked to have bought a new one, but they are too expensive now, thanks to tariffs.

Repair parts were cheaper, so I got another few years out of the one I have.
