He made a distinction between them and the "very fine people" comment that all the news media and talk shows ran with. they went out of their way to omit anything that showed balance to Trump's statement

I believe trump's words were fine people on both sides. Both sides of the issue of removing statues? both sides of the groups that showed up that day?
Can you be assured that every one who came out to take down statues was a fine person? I'm sure many of them were Antifa, and a lot of people were from out of state getting involved in someone else's local issue. So I would definately say there were bad people on both sides. Trump pretty much said the same thing but that bit that is ignored.

Most likely the fine people on both sides were just those who came to protest or stand up for their belief on the issue of removing confederate statues. One side or another on that issue does not a good or bad person make.... some people see the old statues as something historical while others see them as honoring slavery etc. To say all those people belong to one radical group or agree with those groups sentiments is pretty unfair. You could probably start with who got bussed in from out of state and who was just a local resident who showed up. I believe Trump was simply trying to smooth out a bad situation in his way and the media wasn't going to have any of that.
