trump kneecaps the GOP shutdown strategy

No more sea looking but I will correct you.

Do some research on what the stimulus packages did.

I never said that stimulus checks were subject to income tax.

WW
You said they added tax revenue.

I saw one TikTok (take it for whatever that's worth) with Johnson saying, "There is no more money" talking bout the ACA. We had money for a parade in DC (just to name one extravagance) but not underwriting health insurance?
The repub way. Pay for trump's birthday parade but don't help defray American's insurance costs. Scum

Argentina just got $20B.

Poor people in red states (not to mention blue states) are getting nothing.

I'd love to hear a MAGA type justify this....

How much you want to bet there will be no discussion about Trump sending $20B to Argentina.

Yeah the govt wasn’t shot down by the dems when that happened

I agree with Trump on this one. The Senate needs to end the filibuster. With its end enforce your will for the remainder of this Congressional session. Do so responsibly at risk of getting your butts tossed next election leaving voters in charge. Quit sitting on your butts, hauling in the money, and not taking any responsibility.

Oh, did I leave out that repubs in Congress are getting paid while federal employees go without?
You definitely left out that Dems in Congress are being paid.

It might make sense to end the filibuster specifically for passing clean CRs to end government shutdowns. That recurring bit of political theater got played out decades ago.

As for removing the Filibuster entirely? That would be a big mistake and I don't think you'd even get a majority in the Senate on both sides to do that. Both sides know they will be in the minority at one time or another and the Filibuster is the only thing that ensures changes to public policy have some small measure of bipartisan support.

True, none of them should be paid. Especially the POS tearing the WH down.

Well, I have news that will undoubtedly bring a smile to your face then.

Trump doesn't keep his presidential salary. He donates it to various Government agencies like the Natl. Park Service. He might even donate his next check to the WH rebuilding effort.

NOW is the time to negotiate.... Republicans need to get at least 7 Democratic senators to vote with them, once again, to raise our debt...ceiling, and have enough votes to pass it. Compromise and negotiate to get at minimum, those 7.

Stomping their feet, or going home and twiddling their thumbs doing nothing to get the senators needed, and then Congress to also agree, is simply stupid...we pay them to work things out...work with each other....not this childish crap of "My way or the highway!". Give dems some of what they want on the reversal of the medical care cuts the gop put in the big beautiful bill....

Dems need to pass cloture on a clean CR and leave the hard negotiating to the actual new appropriations bill.

He more than makes up the salary by stealing tax payer money....$230 million dollars to start.

How about a couple more BILLION DOLLARS to one of trump's buddies in South America?

If he earns it, sure. I am no envious nor do I believe the ultra-rich owe me anything.

Wow, the ShutDown games between the two parties are quite entertaining! Yet, American voters often seem like puppets. Meanwhile, politicians remain content while millions of Americans continue to suffer. I don't believe it! This is America or a third world country? lol. :)

The shutdown pay issue is just one example of how constitutional loopholes can create systemic inequities. It underscores the need for ongoing constitutional review and potential amendments to address modern political challenges that the original framers could not have anticipated. :)

Government Shutdown Impact on Congress Members

Members of Congress continue to receive their full salary during government shutdowns, which is a key reason why they can potentially use shutdowns as a political tool without personally suffering financial consequences.

Here are the key details:

Constitutional Protection of Congressional Pay

  • Congress members' pay is protected under Article I, Section 6 of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees they will be compensated "out of the Treasury of the United States"
  • Most members of Congress receive a salary of $174,000 per year, with leadership positions earning even more

Voluntary Pay Withholding

While some lawmakers have voluntarily requested to have their pay withheld during shutdowns, this is not mandatory:

  • Some Congress members like Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) and Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ) have requested their paychecks be withheld
  • However, this is an individual choice, not a requirement

Contrast with Other Federal Workers

  • Millions of federal workers are furloughed or forced to work without pay during shutdowns
  • Active-duty military members are particularly impacted, often working without receiving paychecks
  • Essential workers like air traffic controllers and TSA agents must continue working without immediate compensation

Why It Matters

The fact that Congress members continue to be paid while other federal employees suffer creates a significant disconnect. This financial insulation potentially reduces the urgency for Congress to resolve budget impasses quickly, as they do not personally experience the immediate economic hardship that shutdowns cause for millions of Americans.

Some lawmakers have proposed constitutional amendments to prevent Congress from receiving pay during shutdowns, but these have not yet been successful. That's too bad? Lol. :)
