trump kneecaps the GOP shutdown strategy

They are irrelevant
Did they even have school in the south?
Gotcha! The gaslighter claims the fact repubilcans have a majority everywehre is "irrelevant" to their control of each branch.

Nuking the Filibuster for nominations was one thing. Going down the slippery slope of nuking it for budgets and general legislation is a whole different animal.

Why would anyone think republicans would have enough votes to end the filibuster?

The reason it’s unhelpful in this case is that it legitimizes Democrats’ talking point that Republicans could end this shutdown any time they want to. And that could make it harder for Republicans to shake the blame they’ve been saddled with.

It’s been pretty remarkable how much Americans have continued to blame Republicans more than Democrats for the shutdown, despite it being Democrats who are seeking the concession (i.e. an extension of the enhanced Obamacare subsidies). A Washington Post-ABC News poll released Thursday showed 45% of Americans mainly blamed Trump and the GOP, versus 33% who held Democrats responsible.

Yes, the repubs could get rid of the filibuster. But they won't. Do they realize they are losing in their shutdown efforts? They have control of the WH, the Senate, and the House. They cannot blame the Dems, when the Dems control nothing. They would rather inflict pain on millions of Americans that compromise on ACA subsidies. Everyone know trump and his cronies want to kill the ACA. The GOP House is becoming a stain on American history. They are not working, they are vacationing at home And they think they can win in 2026? These weeks of the GOP House sitting on their hands are going to be great campaign ads for Dems.

It takes 60 votes in the Senate.

How many Senate seats do Republicans have? Hint: 53.

I saw one TikTok (take it for whatever that's worth) with Johnson saying, "There is no more money" talking bout the ACA. We had money for a parade in DC (just to name one extravagance) but not underwriting health insurance?

Dems are getting paid despite the Dem Senators holding out on Cloture.
NOW is the time to negotiate.... Republicans need to get at least 7 Democratic senators to vote with them, once again, to raise our debt...ceiling, and have enough votes to pass it. Compromise and negotiate to get at minimum, those 7.

Stomping their feet, or going home and twiddling their thumbs doing nothing to get the senators needed, and then Congress to also agree, is simply stupid...we pay them to work things out...work with each other....not this childish crap of "My way or the highway!". Give dems some of what they want on the reversal of the medical care cuts the gop put in the big beautiful bill....

What I realize is it takes 60 votes to pass a CR in the Senate and the Republicans do not control 60 seats. I also know Schumer and the Democrats voted for these type of CR during the Biden presidency 13 times but now they won’t. Schumer and the Democrats could end this shutdown anytime they wanted but they refuse.
Do you think not wanting the ACA subsidies to lapse is unreasonable?

It does not take 60 votes to suspend the filibuster.

It takes only a simple majority (which is 51 votes) to suspend the rule and then a simple majority to invoke cluture.

How many Senate seats to Republican have? Answer: 53. How many seats does it take to suspend the rule? Answer: 51 (and in a 50/50 tie the GOP President of the Senate casts the tiebreaking vote and he's a Republican.

So question, how many DEM votes are need to suspend the rule, invoke cloture, then pass a bill? Hint: 0.

Correct the govt was funded then. Its not now because the dems have voted 15 times not to fund it

You have to realize that a lot of the democrats on this forum are only aware of what they are told by the party. They are unable to understand simple math unless told what the answer is by the party. They are unable to understand simple facts without being told what the facts are by the party.
They do not realize that we can not afford to put 1.5 Trillion dollars more debt on to the country instead of fixing a broken system. The democrats have not told them that we need to stop spending because just paying the interest on the current debt is $960 billion.
But of course when a democrat is in charge of anything there is an idea that you can spend your way out of any problem. Look at California’s high speed rail. Nothing beats it.

I don't think they are worth shutting down the government over. The Democrats can vote for a clean CR like they did under Biden 13 times to keep the government running while they and the Republicans hash out those subsidies in the larger overall budget.

There is nothing to negotiate, this is a clean CR, the same CR Dems have already voted for and passed

If they want the gop and President to help them out of their covid sub expiration date they need to open the govt first

The "cure" worse than the affliction.

Demoncrats will one day wrest power, and woe betide us all if they use this.
