Trump Kills $500M Expansion of Nissan Plant in Mississippi

Hard to make a profit when the market is still developing and the barrier to entry is so high.

I’m not sure what the mystery is here.

People are eagerly buying hybrids.

People are eagerly buying hybrids.
This is somewhat true....

They are buying hybrids because gas is expensive. (If their old cars died due to wrecks or age)

Hybrids are more fuel efficient than regular ICE cars.

But the used car market is still on top currently. People dont want the debt.

I drive for a Honda and Toyota dealer. Went and picked up a Camry hybrid. 300 miles. 46 mpg.

I've had Accord Hybrids hit 50 mpg.

This shouldn't need subsidized. Much of this is simply buying votes.

Oh how I most certainly WISH I was wrong.
Unfortunately the empty EV car plant is empty....nobody works there....it sits unused. Nobody is making cars of any sort in it.

It would have employed all kinds of illegal immigrants and brought money into the state somehow....
Ok.
People are eagerly buying hybrids.
How many you think this year?

Since the EV Credits were euthanized by Trump, Nissan decided to euthanize the expansion of their plant in Canton, MS.

Talk about getting what you voted for!

The plant isn't closing...its just not expanding

As we're seeing with the great Iranian mis-adventure, putting all of your eggs in one basket energy-wise can be costly. It makes total sense to go with hybrid (I wouldn't do electric only) vehicles. Some lessons need to be learned the hard way. Mississippi is learning one.

Consumers have killed the EV push.

You can't force a product that is currently inferior to what it is replacing for most people.

People weren't made to buy cars over horse and carriages, cars were the superior product.

People weren't made to give up fax machines, PDF's and other secure document systems were the easier thing to use.

People didn't have to give up whale oil, petroleum was easier to get and cheaper to produce.

I drove about 1400 miles one week in a hybrid van. The battery powered it for about 300 of those miles…about 3/4 of a tank. It’s a winner: a big winner over straight electric cars.

We have one. Works for us.

While completely irrelevant, no. It isnt.

You dont support it but its not irrelevant.

Many who are against subsidies for EV's will sadly support wasting billions on wars.

No we didnt. It was a currency swap.
Worthless Argentina currency

The Argentine Peso (ARS) has experienced extreme devaluation, often referred to as "worthless" due to hyperinflation (over \(100\%\) annually in 2023). As of late 2025, the currency continued to struggle, with informal exchange rates significantly higher than official rates and the government battling to prevent further collapse despite US dollar support. Lol the US Treasury actually made a PROFIT from this deal.

And then we have wind turbine projects that Trump is paying out two billion to stop construction.

So between the last few months, there have been nearly $2 billion in these payments. The administration had initially tried to block some of these wind projects from going forward, citing national security concerns. That was batted down in several different courts.

Hybrids are not a wholly bad idea.

However....
From those that are currently owning them...
The maintenance and constant repairs are something of a hassle.
It's not tires eating like a full out EV.

But something seems to be constantly breaking on the things. (Death of a thousand cuts) kinda like the McClarens.....nice and expensive but you still can't drive them even if you can afford to own one. (Always in the shop)

Now I will say that eventually they will solve all these maintenance and reliability issues....and the cars will be just fine.

And if they perform like an Edison Motors Tractor (drive by wire) they can have insane amounts of torque and HP as well as braking power and regenerative coasting.

I'm not anywhere near close to pulling the trigger on a hybrid or any new vehicle.

I'd rather spend the gas money than pay a banker interest money.
Plus the new cars all report to the gubbermint. Not having it.
