CDZ Trump: "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose any voters"

What makes Trump supporters tick? This is an interesting analysis and makes a lot of sense. Please discuss, civily, the ideas in the analysis.

"During and after World War II, psychologists conceived of the authoritarian personality as a pattern of attitudes and values revolving around adherence to society’s traditional norms, submission to authorities who personify or reinforce those norms, and antipathy—to the point of hatred and aggression—toward those who either challenge in-group norms or lie outside their orbit. Among white Americans, high scores on measures of authoritarianism today tend to be associated with prejudice against a wide range of “out-groups,” including homosexuals, African Americans, immigrants, and Muslims. Authoritarianism is also associated with suspiciousness of the humanities and the arts, and with cognitive rigidity, militaristic sentiments, and Christian fundamentalism.

When individuals with authoritarian proclivities fear that their way of life is being threatened, they may turn to strong leaders who promise to keep them safe—leaders like Donald Trump. In a national poll conducted recently by the political scientist Matthew MacWilliams, high levels of authoritarianism emerged as the single strongest predictor of expressing political support for Donald Trump. Trump’s promise to build a wall on the Mexican border to keep illegal immigrants out and his railing against Muslims and other outsiders have presumably fed that dynamic.

As the social psychologist Jesse Graham has noted, Trump appeals to an ancient fear of contagion, which analogizes out-groups to parasites, poisons, and other impurities. In this regard, it is perhaps no psychological accident that Trump displays a phobia of germs, and seems repulsed by bodily fluids, especially women’s. He famously remarked that Megyn Kelly of Fox News had “blood coming out of her wherever,” and he repeatedly characterized Hillary Clinton’s bathroom break during a Democratic debate as “disgusting.” Disgust is a primal response to impurity. On a daily basis, Trump seems to experience more disgust, or at least to say he does, than most people do.

The authoritarian mandate is to ensure the security, purity, and goodness of the in-group—to keep the good stuff in and the bad stuff out. In the 1820s, white settlers in Georgia and other frontier areas lived in constant fear of American Indian tribes. They resented the federal government for not keeping them safe from what they perceived to be a mortal threat and a corrupting contagion. Responding to these fears, President Jackson pushed hard for the passage of the Indian Removal Act, which eventually led to the forced relocation of 45,000 American Indians. At least 4,000 Cherokees died on the Trail of Tears, which ran from Georgia to the Oklahoma territory.

An American strand of authoritarianism may help explain why the thrice-married, foul-mouthed Donald Trump should prove to be so attractive to white Christian evangelicals. As Jerry Falwell Jr. told The New York Times in February, “All the social issues—traditional family values, abortion—are moot if isis blows up some of our cities or if the borders are not fortified.” Rank-and-file evangelicals “are trying to save the country,” Falwell said. Being “saved” has a special resonance among evangelicals—saved from sin and damnation, of course, but also saved from the threats and impurities of a corrupt and dangerous world.

When my research associates and I once asked politically conservative Christians scoring high on authoritarianism to imagine what their life (and their world) might have been like had they never found religious faith, many described utter chaos—families torn apart, rampant infidelity and hate, cities on fire, the inner rings of hell. By contrast, equally devout politically liberal Christians who scored low on authoritarianism described a barren world depleted of all resources, joyless and bleak, like the arid surface of the moon. For authoritarian Christians, a strong faith—like a strong leader—saves them from chaos and tamps down fears and conflicts. Donald Trump is a savior, even if he preens and swears, and waffles on the issue of abortion.

In December, on the campaign trail in Raleigh, North Carolina, Trump stoked fears in his audience by repeatedly saying that “something bad is happening” and “something really dangerous is going on.” He was asked by a 12-year-old girl from Virginia, “I’m scared—what are you going to do to protect this country?”

Trump responded: “You know what, darling? You’re not going to be scared anymore. They’re going to be scared.” "

Wouldn't it be nice to have a system where there was ACTUAL CHOICE? In other countries people can choose from a range of parties. In the US, two.

I think the thread has been hijacked and taken away from the origninal post and purpose. This thread is to discuss Trump and, essentially, why his strong supporters are so loyal.

It is not about Obama. If anyone wants to discuss Obama, please start a thread to do that.

Also, please deal with the definition of the authoritarian personality used in the analysis:

"...psychologists conceived of the authoritarian personality as a pattern of attitudes and values revolving around adherence to society’s traditional norms, submission to authorities who personify or reinforce those norms, and antipathy—to the point of hatred and aggression—toward those who either challenge in-group norms or lie outside their orbit."
Defending Our Way of Life Offends the Psychobabblers

We have to eliminate the enemies of our society. Trump is the only one who takes our side; the rest are either on the other side or compromise with our enemies. Was David "authoritarian" in standing up to Goliath?

The Left, which usurped power and turned loose criminals, moochers, and perverts on us just to put us in our place, are the ones driven by authoritarian instincts. Despite the images the partisan media presents them preaching, they don't believe in their distorted and disturbed values at all; they do believe they can minimize and silence us by their hostile tactics, and that's what motivates those pushy and bossy snobs behind the masks the media let them wear..
This is a good example of what the article points out.

"We have to eliminate the enemies of our society. Trump is the only one who takes our side; the rest are either on the other side or compromise with our enemies. Was David "authoritarian" in standing up to Goliath?"

"Defending" is one way of looking at it; it's an example of fear, fear of change, fear of people or ideas that are different. Feeling that you need some kind of savior to protect you from what you perceive as the terrible things that are outside the confines of your safe, known existence.

Society and culture change and evolve over time: that is an historical fact. You can't stop change. And generally, overall, it is for the better. For example, the role of women in society. Only a few generations ago, during the Victorian age, women in Western society were relegated to the role of chattlel, possessions of their fathers or husbands. They were persecuted if they did not remain virgins before marriage, they were expected to obey their husbands, husbands could easily get a doctor (who were all males) to sign a paper and have a tiresome wife put in a mental institution, women had very few legal rights, women did not go to university or only went to women's universities that prepared them to fill the woman's role in society, and the list goes on and on. Women were scorned and put in jail for demanding the right to vote. Change was vigorously opposed by the segment of society that does not like change, "Our way of life," as you state. But it has changed and it has been good, overall, for society. In fact, your group vehementaly opposes the restrictions on women in Muslim society. So, you obviously believe giving women freedom and power is a good thing. But, initially, your 'way of life' was intensely threatened by the role of women in society changing.

This is the point of the article, IMO, that the segment of society who are threatened by change are deeply fearful and deeply angry about those changes and thus fiercely embrace someone like Trump who vows to defend your 'way of life' and 'make America great again.'

What’s tragic and dangerous is that the fear and anger are completely unwarranted – no one’s ‘way of life’ is in need of being ‘defended’; no one’s ‘way of life’ is being ‘attacked’ or ‘threatened’ – it’s nothing but unfounded, wrongheaded perception.

Classic rightwing authoritarianism:

Lies: The Left, which usurped power

Fearmongering: and turned loose criminals, moochers, and perverts on us

Attack ‘the media’: the images the partisan media presents

Playing ‘the victim’: they do believe they can minimize and silence us by their hostile tactics

Please discuss the analysis in the OP. Thank you.

Analysis? LOL After declaring Donald Trump mentally deficient to be President...a bunch of liberal sociologists have decided that those who voted for him also have mental issues and that explains their vote? Can I be painfully blunt here, Esmeralda? Your "analysis" is simply one more pathetic attempt by the left to explain why the voters wouldn't listen to them and vote for Hillary Clinton!
To me, this issue is not only why they voted for him by why they are so fiercely loyal despite his behavior, such as the tweets that are so unpresidential, the contradictions (or lies if you will) in the statements we see almost daily, his less than virtuous sexual behaior, etc. Which goes back to the title of the thread, his so called 'joke' that clearly suggests no matter what he does, his supporters will stand by him.

when did the left usurp power??
The Preppy Republic

In the 1960s, the doting fathers of these spoiled sheltered snobs got anti-majority legislation passed fitting their New Age Sewage agenda. This tiny clique should have no power at all, so any they took is usurpation. Whether they pretend to be Democratic or Republican, they block our way forward and must be removed.

There's Nothing Wrong With Turning Back the Clock If It's Connected to a Time Bomb

You try to call something worse merely "different." (As if you unprincipled political predators care about the declining grammatical standards) possibly an instinctively rational reaction to that pushy misuse of different makes people say "different than" rather than "different from." It's also dishonest to start out with the unbiased-sounding "one way of looking at it" when you really mean "a stupid and fearful way," which itself means you are afraid the times are changing against your entire agenda. Your day is done, and you are due for even more things to fear about what is going to happen to your feral or degenerate pets, who are the enemies of a rational and productive society.

Another blanket statement you tuck in our minds with is about change. It is not always for the better, and it is imposed from the authoritarian top, instead of what you pretend to be free and natural change. Third, you try to force us to assume that change cannot go too far in the other direction.

Does your one-time support based on the THEN choices mean you are FORCED to CONTINUE to support him no matter WHAT he does? Because that's what you're doing.

Mine was not one-time support. I liked Trump from day one and predicted he would win the whole shebang. He did. I like him even more now.

He was asked by a 12-year-old girl from Virginia, “I’m scared—what are you going to do to protect this country?”
What makes a 12-year-old be scared? Nothing other than the parents of a 12-year-old inculcating that poor child with fear and foreboding, that or perhaps the parents not being convincing when they give their child words of reassurance and comfort.

An adult's not being convincing to a 12-year-old says more, and nothing good, about the adult than it does about the child. I mean, really. How lame must one be not to be able to convincingly tell one's pre-teen child that all they need to do is always be truthful, show others respect, and be a fine student, and Mom and Dad will take are of everything else?

This is the point of the article, that the segment of society who are threatened by change are deeply fearful and deeply angry about those changes and thus fiercely embrace someone like Trump who vows to defend your 'way of life' and 'make America great again.'

You're not angry are you?
Snap, Cankle, and Pop

Another pathetic attempt at rebuttal. But you may get applauded for it if you snuggle into a safe space with your shrill screeching choir.

Mine was not one-time support. I liked Trump from day one and predicted he would win the whole shebang. He did. I like him even more now.
So then you're just in the tank for Trump, no matter what.

Got it.

Not sure why you're speaking for all other Trump voters, when you're a die-hard shill for 45.

Mr. MarcATL, you just don't get it about good businessmen and Trump. You treat people as good as you can, you do good deeds, you love America's defenders, you run your business like you know what your customers need and you make sure they get it, and when someone waltzes into your employ and acts like a baboon or a bull in a China closet with a customer, you have to tell them that they are fired and why, so they'll never do anything that stupid ever again the next time they're lucky enough to get a good job. And you answer verbal bullies, too, as needed. In Trump's case, the leftist lying cheating pantywaists, you get a twitter account and talk back to them. Oh, wait. Trump already did all those rightful things! What a coincidence that all Obama's men couldn't get any of their lies pasted on President Trump. He did no wrong thing to anyone who didn't have it coming.

That's why business people like this bright, honest, and good man. And that's exactly what the evidence showed for the fifty million dollars the leftwingers in Congress spent trying to find one--only just one itsy, bitsy, teensy, weenie error in all that, and they found zippo, nada, nothingburger, not one single thing due to his street smart savvy about what brings people back to your business. Plus, he is something of a financial wiz, which makes him America's MVP.

Sorry to be so cheerful when I speak tragedy to your little plots to "get Trump and all his supporters."
