Trump hit with criminal charges in New York, a first for a US ex-president -New York Times

Clever of Trump to turn all the strobe lights his way --- that was part of why I reacted to your post about him stealing all the oxygen out of the air. It was indeed exactly what happened.

All the same, given this event at 5:28 PM today was TOTALLY unexpected, I am not going to predict anything about anything, except that now it's clear that the Dems will do absolutely whatever it takes to get rid of Trump. Up to and including assassination, I would guess. But I hope not.

Team Biden is probably not going to have shit to say about it. There's no advantage in commenting on it, and if anything, it'll make him look political. The rank and file Democrats in Congress and the pundits will have plenty to say about it of course. I would assume that most are under the impression that this will damage Trump politically, though there will be calls for him to suspend his campaign.

There may be pressure in some states to take him off the ballot, but I don't think they can do that. Shit, when I lived in Louisiana, I think Rep. William Jefferson ran after being indicted on federal charges and Edwin Edwards was always under some sort of federal criminal probe and won like 2 or 3 times.

I'd like to give DA Bragg the benefit of the doubt and assume he sees Trump as someone who has used his wealth for years to evade the law and wants to be the one to make him face the law.

But okay, let's do a hypothetical and take the more cynical route and assume that this is politically motivated. If that's the case, I don't think it's about Soros or any of the shit we're reading on social media. If you want to say that this is an example of an aggressive/over-zealous local prosecutor trying to position himself for something bigger - New York AG or Governor - down the road, I could see that angle. Bragg wouldn't be the first DA/AG/US Atty to give into the temptation of trying to take down a big fish to make a name for himself.

The truth is probably somewhere in between. Bragg genuinely believes Trump is a white collar criminal, and he also sees this as an opportunity to boost his political career.
Yup. It could be a mix of both. You don't get to be the Manhattan DA without political ambitions.

But that doesn't mean Trump did not commit the crime. You do the crime...

Yeah, I think I'm out of all this now. This is what they pretend to call democracy? Putting political opponents in prison because they might win?
Who put him in prison? Are you presuming he is guilty and a jury of his peers will find it so? I am shocked, shocked, I say!

You people make fantastic leaps of the imagination One individual does not reflect on the whole group. That's bigotry to think like that. All Republicans aren't bad just the ones who support a criminal like trump.

Legal consequences aside, who is more embarrassed by the public humiliation of being associated with Trump?

Stormy Daniels, Melania or Mike Pence?

Update

Ron DeSantis
@GovRonDeSantis

The weaponization of the legal system to advance a political agenda turns the rule of law on its head. It is un-American. The Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney has consistently bent the law to downgrade felonies and to excuse criminal misconduct. Yet, now he is stretching the law to target a political opponent. Florida will not assist in an extradition request given the questionable circumstances at issue with this Soros-backed Manhattan prosecutor and his political agenda.

whoa. You got this post in like 15 seconds before we saw it on Fox news ----------- DeSantis saying he would not extradite. VERY smart, DeSantis is definitely keeping his powder dry. If Trump does go down in flames, God forbid, DeSantis may come up utilizing the now rather large vote that would have gone to Trump.

I don't agree. This is the first charge of more to come. All will be televised, and the nitty gritty details of his corruption will be seen by all. I'm looking forward to his many trials. Pass the popcorn!
I anticipate the same objectivity that was shown in the two scam impeachments with the same tax dollar-wasting results. At least those dollars will be yours that are wasted and not mine.

You think he's a criminal because he might run for election against Biden and horrors, he might actually win!! That, of course, is what Democrats mean by "criminal" these days.
When will you people ever accept the truth; trump did this to himself. End of story.

We don't indict political opponents in the USA. Until now that is.

Democratic Party's slippery slope, turning us into a 🍌 Republic. While interfering in the 2024 primaries and general election.
Really? All you got to do, to be a criminal and get away with anything and everything is to become a politician late in life? Who knew?

When Trump gets charged he does it with style? He sure deserves everything they throw at him.
