If Trump wins the nomination, he won't have enough time to put together the ground support that he will need to beat the Democratic nominee. In presidential elections, Dems tend to have more voters, so it's a matter of getting voters to the polls. Romney lost because Obama had a much stronger ground game. Trump will have an even weaker ground game than Romney had.

Yesterday, Donald Trump spoke with right-wing radio host Michael Savage about his plan to take on ISIS, bragging that he came up with the U.S. plan to attack the group's oil infrastructure, which he said only started "about two days ago." (The U.S. has actually launched hundreds of attacks against the so-called Islamic State's oil infrastructure since last August.) "Does anybody say, 'Thank you Donald?" he asked. "Nobody. I've been the only one."
Savage went on to ask Trump what he believes is President Obama's "real reason for flooding America with Muslims from Syria," which Trump said was "hard to imagine." "Obviously some people think it's evil intentions, I think it's incompetence, regardless, a lot of people think it's evil intentions," Trump continued, before claiming that it is "very easy" for Muslims to enter the U.S. but "virtually impossible" for Christians.
Later in the program, Trump praised Russia's intervention in Syria, claiming that "Russia's been amazing in what they're doing because they're fighting to win." "I think it's wonderful that they bomb ISIS and that it's great," Trump said, before hailing Putin for "really bombing the hell out of them." Of course, over 90 percent of Russian airstrikes in Syria have targeted anti-regime rebels rather than ISIS, and have, at times, even provided air cover for ISIS forces during their battles with rebel groups. -

I'd certainly vote for Trump if he gets nomination but I see self-funding as a liability, especially in the general election. His opponent will have advantage of a political machine. If Trump plays it solo he certainly won't be beholden to anybody but that will work both ways - nobody will have the motivation of self-interest to bust their butt to get him elected.
Or put another way I see it like this, if my syndicate owns a politician naturally we're all motivated to get him elected. The other guy is simply relying on employees.
