No, the rebels weren't "traitorous" at all. The question that the War of Northern Aggression resolved was whether a state could withdraw from the union.

It wasn't decided until the war was over. At the time the war was being fought it was undecided.

BTW, the Confederates were all exonerated in the end, President Jeff Davis being the last, exonerated by his fellow Democrat Jimmy Carter.
