Trump cancels housing bill signing over Senate inaction on SAVE Act

The Trump Admin announced that he is refusing to sign the Housing Bill - just approved - until Congress passes the SAVE ACT. The SAVE ACT currently does not have the votes to pass the Senate.

President Trump canceled the signing of a bipartisan housing bill on Wednesday, saying he would not sign the legislation until the Senate passes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act.

“Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

The development underscores the tension between Trump and Senate Republicans on the SAVE America Act.

Trump has pressured Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) to abolish the filibuster in an effort to pass the legislation, something Thune has so far refused to do.

The Housing bill passed the House and Senate with large, veto-proof majorities, though if the president doesn’t sign the bill within 10 days and Congress adjourns, it could fall victim to a pocket veto.

Congress is scheduled to begin a two-week recess on Friday, though that will not be a formal adjournment. Senate leaders will schedule pro forma sessions over that recess.

The president’s relationship with Senate Republicans, including with Thune, has increasingly grown more tense after a string of clashes over what the party should do on certain issues.

Thune told reporters Wednesday after Trump announced he would not sign the housing bill: “At this point, I don’t have any observations about that.”
I believe if the Senate stays in session, it will become law without his signature after 10 days.

For 2026 yeah, but maybe 2028?
No, that would be a much more acceptable timeline. A simple change making it effective two years from execution. Thats a rush for government but do-able.

Again, just use the underlying structure for REAL ID / Passports.

Trump is already a lame duck president. He is squirming to force his vote plan for us all, and it ain't working.
At this point he has nothing to lose if he does not sign it. You guys are scared shitless on the Save Act. And that means you cheat. We are turning into the Village. We will be eating tree bark within a few decades.

It ain't the timeline, your cult opposes Voter ID and proof of citizenship to their core.

Clearly, this man is not well.

The announcement came as House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) and other House GOP leaders were touting the housing bill at a news conference, the stage set for the president in the National Statuary Hall — including a table and chair to sign the legislation.

The housing bill was set to be a rare bipartisan policy accomplishment for the president touching on an issue that has dogged him in polling ahead of the midterms: addressing Americans’ affordability concerns.

As Trump made his way into a previously scheduled luncheon with Senate Republicans at the Capitol — after skipping out on the earlier bill-signing appearance — he was asked by reporters whether his election bill was more important to him than addressing the housing crisis.

“They want a lot of communists to come in,” Trump said, without specifying whom he was talking about. “This country is not going to have communists.” He did not mention housing affordability.

When push comes to shove he clearly prioritizes rigging the elections in order to maintain power above all things including making home ownership for affordable. IOW, once again he has chosen himself over the country.

At this point is anyone really surprised?

LOL....Has anyone here bothered to even read the housing bill?

It bans the likes of Blackrock from buying up homes but Blackrock as a corporation is a "person" in the eyes of the law (just ask John Roberts) just like anyone else who can buy a home.

OK. I have to admit, this seems quite pointless. I am against this decision by Trump.

Trump was in favor of and wanted a housing bill to lower costs for Americans. It was actually more or less his idea. There are a lot of good items in this bill and it was so overwhelmingly bipartisan that it seems about a 100% sure thing that they could override a Trump veto, which means Trump holds no cards on this issue, not even any cards he could bluff with. It would be different if it was not veto proof and Trump could use this decision to pressure Congress to pass the SAVE act but that is not the case. Pretty stupid I would have to agree because it guarantees a Trump loss on the subject. There is no way for him to win on this.

You’re talking about “The Elizabeth ‘Pocahontas’ Warren centric housing bill, which is of minor importance”?
