Trump Backtracks On Campaign Pledge To Bring Down Grocery Prices

who are the gougers?...
Supermarkets. Food companies. I'll give you one example but in this example, free market capitalism actually worked. Cereal companies. They raised their prices. Everyone was on lockdown and eating cereal. They gouged us. But that's cool. Eventually, people got sick of eating cereal and the companies had to drop their prices.

The truth is, none of them are gouging us. For example, chicken companies. Chicken is so fucking expensive. But people keep buying it no matter the prices. So why would they ever lower prices? And their costs have gone up too now. The companies who sell to them have raised their prices too and they aren't going to lower their prices either.

How much is wood? I remember contractors renigged on jobs they bid and won but didn't start after the pandemic because the price of lumber doubled. Has the price come back down yet? Will it ever?

So you see, Trump was full of shit to blame Biden for inflation or claim he's going to fix it. One way Biden, Liberals and Democrats fixed inflation was supporting unions. All union members got inflation raises. They had the power to demand them. The CEO in union companies doesn't get to give himself all the raises.

In April 2024, Volkswagen workers in Chattanooga, Tennessee voted to join the UAW, becoming the first Southern autoworkers outside the Big Three to do so. The workers voted almost 3-to-1 to join the union. They are now negotiating their first contract, which they hope will include higher wages, better benefits, and protections.

  • Flex-N-Gate workers in Chicago
Workers at the Flex-N-Gate plant in Chicago voted 195-to-126 to join the UAW. The workers said they won their union voice and are now working to win fair pay, good benefits, and time off with their families.

  • The UAW won big in the auto strike — but what does it mean for the rest of us?

Nothing wrong with workers having a voice.

I wonder why Biden released so much oil from the Strategic Reserve if he was trying to push price up…

That’s… confusing and illogical

I agree.

Trump praised Musk for firing workers who went on strike.

“You’re the greatest cutter,” Trump told Musk. “I look at what you do. You walk in and say, ‘You want to quit?’ I won’t mention the name of the company but they go on strike and you say, ’That’s OK. You’re all gone.'”

You’re claiming that Biden “purposely raised prices”?

Really? How did he do that and how do you determine motive ?

What an insane post you made
Are you still claiming Democrats don't control the weather?

I dont understand that kind of mentality.

I think it’s going to be a long four years for you.

It's going to be a long four years for America and the world.

But just like the first failed Trump administration. America and the world will survive the second failed Trump administration.

let's see what happens to those prices after he gets into a second tariff round with China, the EU, Mexico etc.
My assumption is that these are just threats, and that his plan is to have things ironed out enough when he takes office for him to claim some kind of "win". To him, the entire world is just the NY city commercial real estate business, and he figures he can just get his way by threatening people. The whole incoming administration is going to act that way. And, sadly, it could work.

Threats, intimidation, lies, personal attacks, crimes, the whole bag. He represents the worst of America, and America appears to be fine with that.

Ask anyone who is a business owner or CEO if they would be in favor of a law making it illegal to strike. You don't understand? They don't want labor to have that kind of power. And Republicans will tell you that the workers always ask/want too much. Unreasonable. Well, it must not be unreasonable because they got it by way of striking.

It's the law that it's legal to strike. Didn't Reagan make it illegal for air line traffic controllers to strike?

The Federal Service Labor-Management Relations Statute (FSLMRS) prohibits federal employees from striking. The FSLMRS also makes it an unfair labor practice for unions to call or participate in strikes that interfere with federal agency operations.

  • State employees
Some states allow public-sector workers to strike, but there are restrictions:
    • Strike rights: A dozen states, including Alaska, California, and Colorado, have laws that give public-sector workers some strike rights.

    • Prohibited strikes: Most states prohibit strikes that could endanger public safety, health, or welfare. Police, firefighters, and paramedics are usually prohibited from striking.

    • Public school teachers: Many states restrict strikes by public school teachers.

You might well be very correct in your assumption.

However he still is in need of political backing and thus funding - aka economic oriented companies and individuals - who expect a personal economic gain for their support.
Tariffs (and all that comes with it) are about the easiest methods to achieve that - and these companies and individuals couldn't be bothered about a population suffering even further from price-hikes. - they would love it.

Yep. And the strongman autocrat is assembling his circle of oligarchs, beginning with the biggest of them all, Musk. Looks like Bezos may be next in line.

It worked for Putin for a long time.

Remember Trump ran on it's Biden's fault

Higher retail meat prices during COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted U.S. households in 2020

Ouch

During 2020, U.S. households spent 14.5 percent more money to buy meat for at-home consumption as compared with 2019. This increase in spending reflected both an increase in the amount of meat households bought from retailers to offset reductions in what households previously consumed at restaurants and higher retail food prices.

So we weren't eating out as much. So grocery store chicken is way more expensive now. But Biden actually has it under control. In the last year Kroger has started doing Buy 1 Get 1 on chicken. I won't pay $7 for 3 chicken breast. But I will buy 6 for $7. So I buy 4 packs for $14 and stock up and wait for the next BOGO
