Been a lot of hyperbole on this one. Plans I saw made it look like the price tag includes basically doing a major rehab on the entire East Wing of the White House and expanding it back maybe a third to 40% longer across all floors. The ballroom will be just one of the things in the added space.

So what is the problem? The $200 million will come from private donors including President Trump himself. No taxpayer funds will be involved. A ballroom would be a nice addition and a way to entertain visiting dignitaries. Pretty much every President leaves his own mark on the White House with some addition or innovation or renovation. A ballroom would be more advantageous to the people than Obama's basketball court or Ford's tunnel to avoid having to go outside to get to the Whitehouse swimming pool or Nixon's bowling alley.
