Very large gatherings have always been held outside in tents. This should have been done years ago. I love that the space will be in the East Wing which is where the First Lady's staff has offices. Wiv3s don't need a huge staff anyway.

He is basically just expanding the East Wing back about 40% to about where the guard gate is and reconfiguring what is already there in it. The First Lady may have to move her office closer to the POTUS, but it really isn't as radical a change to the WH as the internet seems to think. TBH everyone should like it because 1) its free and 2) The POTUS won't have to keep pitching tents on the south lawn to host a state or social event. It is kind of a bad look for America to be throwing State Dinners in some ghetto looking wedding reception tent like you are afraid to let the people come inside your house.

Trump is modernizing the White House. The realities of a nation with a large government. That ballroom may help with negotiations also. Of course, there will be many self-important putrid larvae there also at events. From his point of view, Republicans when in power in the future can use it as Progs used the Kennedy Center as an example and so many other places. The Republican President will have control of it. And of course, Progs will do the same. Can you imagine the Socialist to Communist dinner parties the Progs will have as they live and eat top shelf, spouting the verbs and nouns of the unfortunate to make themselves feel better and what is worse, know they are playing the system for their own gains. I always thought there was a large area for this. It helps to self-contain the administration of who is in power in an unsure world.
