The personal details and fingerprints of thousands of UK citizens could be at risk, because of a security flaw in the US Government's visa system.
Anyone who has applied for a visa to travel to the US in the last 20 years probably has information stored in the vulnerable database. It currently contains 290 million passport-related records and 184 million visa records.
If exploited, the security gap could let hackers submit false visa applications, change current applications, and steal sensitive data from the 500 million records on file. This includes fingerprints, that are currently used to unlock everything from smartphones to mobile banking accounts.
I think that it is good for business if you are a government insider, that everyone's identity is stolen and randomized worldwide. That way you can randomly invent penalty charges on random loans, without having to deal with pesky issues like who is lent what.
